Comp is lagging, need help!

hi
I have a gigabyte 8KNXP
P4 2.8C
1.5 ghz corsair xms
Radeon 9800 pro


the problem is, my comp is lagging a ton. it takes like 30 secs for the start menu to open when i click it. it also freezes when i type off and on. It's acting like i have a ton of apps running, but i haev nothing running.

Things i've done so far
-ran AVG antivirus
-ran Adaware
-ran Spybot
-defragged

Any help would be great, Thank you

IF you do msconfig, what is running at startup? Do you have your antivirus protection turned on all the time? If so, turn it off. What does it show in task manager for what is running?

Try running with less memory too. Try one stick at a time, then two sticks, then three. Any difference?

Have you correctly installed all the motherboard and video drivers?

right click on my computer and check properties...how much memory is showing?>

Sounds like under 128mb is being recognized....i've seen that before.

yep all the memory is recognized and i should have said that it ran fine a week ago.

ummm there doesn't seem to be any processes out of the ordinary.
I'm thinking of jsut reformatting

I hope you updated Spybot, Adaware, and AVG definations before you ran them..

Sounds like a problem I had with a few PCs running Nortons AV. The PCs would just slow to a crawl, mouse moving incredibly, and basically impossible to use for about 30 seconds. I removed AV and everything was fine. Try to uninstall AVG and see if the problem still exists.
