I've again updated the Topic Summary to inform others that Comodo has updated their downloadable installation file to ver CIS_Setup_3.10.102363.531 which fixes the bug with 16 bit apps.

===

I've been using Comodo Firewall. I'm not using any other part of their suite. I just downloaded the latest update for it, and my customized command line setup went BOOM! :(

At least one of the files I ran on going to the command line hung, and when I tried the simpler CMD command to get to the naked command prompt many other programs that previously worked stalled or gave error messages that the program could not run.

Running XP Pro. This happened on both my Athlon desktop and laptop. Turning the program off didn't solve it. Unistalling it did.

I'm back on the Windows Firewall until I get this solved or find another that works better than the one the built into XP. If I have to choose between my legacy DOS apps and Comodo, I'll flush the comodo.

Unless this is just a bug in Comodo's latest update that they fix, soon, I'm looking for recommendations for another good, free firewall.

TIA :)

Did you try going on to their forums and seeing if anyone there has any solution?

Hi Harvey. Another alternative is Online Armor. http://www.tallemu.com/

They have a free, paid and an version which includes a-squared anti-malware which is almost out of beta. I've been using OA since version 2 and it's easy to use. They also have top notch support in their forums. If your into leak tests then OA scores are at the top. http://www.matousec.com/projec...-challenge/results.php

There should be a new release soon and the free version will most likely have an extra surprise or two.

I upgraded to the latest Comodo Firewall+Av and it hung the broadband connection. Luckily I had created a restore point so I rolled back to the previous version.... Running XP Pro

Can you be more specific about your "customized command line setup" and the errors you are seeing? Did it overwrite your PATH environment variable?

My instruction that calls for the command line refers to a secondary batch file, DOSSET.BAT (see below) that includes a call that sets my preferred path. Since the "update" Comodo, even when the PATH command shows the path is set correctly, the system cannot find any batch file when called from any directory other than where the batch file is stored.

When I go directly to the directory, C:\DOS\BAT and call one of my batch files, some of them report;

[file name] is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

The same happens with some of my old DOS executable .EXE and .COM files. I get a little more function if I shell to the command line using COMMAND, instead of CMD, but it's still hit and miss, and it's functionally useless for my purposes.

AUTOEXEC.NT:

@echo off
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx

CONFIG.NT:

DOS=HIGH, UMB
DEVICE=%SystemRoot\System32\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=%SystemRoot%\System32\EANSI.SYS
FILES=40

COMMAND PROMPT statement:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /k dosset

DOSSET.BAT:

@ECHO OFF
VERIFY ON
CD\DOS\SYSTEM
CRTSAVER 4 >NUL
SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET COPYCMD=/Y
CD
PATH=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\DOS\BAT;C:\DOS\UTIL;C:\DOS\NU
PROMPT $P$G$G
BE SA BRI GRE
DEL C:\DOS\TEMP\*.>NUL

I just got a reply go my post on Comodo's forum referring me to a post in their bug report thread by from their head developer:

It seems we have a bug with 16 bit applicaitons. We will fix this issue this week. Until we fix it, a temporary fix would be renaming guard32.dll in c:\windows\system32\guard32.dll to something else and restarting your computer. When we update CIS, you can restore it back.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I'm glad because I really like Comodo, and I really like and need how I have my command line tricked out to run my legacy DOS apps.

Ah, well... It reminds me why I tend not to be an early adopter. :cool:

All Comodo users who still need command line operations and 16 bit apps should be aware of this problem.
