Communism in America

arcenite

My wife submitted her two weeks notice today and was told that she'd be leaving on bad terms due to their policy of needing one month's notice.

Me and several others have told her to not even spend another brain cycle worrying about it. WWATOTD?

At-will state? If it's NJ where your location says - yep, it's an at-will state. She has no obligation to give notice, nor does the employer have any obligation to give her notice if they terminate her.

Worry not unless the reference is required and/or burning bridges matter.

If I were starting a new job, I'd leave. If I were just quiting to fuck off, I'd stay a month, or even a little longer if that's what it took to get someone up to speed in my position.

I usually give them notice as I am walking out the front door.

Treat a company the same way they would treat you. Would they give you a 1 month notice before they fire or lay you off?

Communism not found, comrade...if anything, blame it on out of control capitalism...

"We own you. You can't quit until we tell you that you can."

Blame it on a slave mentality.

"master said I had to give a 1 month notice before I could leave"

Screw that. I am a free man.

On the flip side I have actually as an employer had to tell someone who turned in their two weeks that that day would be their last.

The parent co at the time was crazy about security after tapes started ending up on the early internet.

I had a guy quit Friday. He told me Tuesday that he was giving his two weeks, but things changed and he needed to start his new job sooner.

Fine by me, I didn't have to worry about him getting hurt the last two weeks and he was a good employee when here, so I'd stil give him a good recommendation.

One company I worked for, an employee gave his two week notice and he was fired on the spot.

Management said something like "if you want to go to work for someone else, there is no use in staying around for 2 weeks"

just because they ask her to stay a month doesn't mean she has to. What is the problem here?

She should say "you are lucky I am giving you the courteous 2 weeks"

My answer would be, "if that's the case, I quit today."

Unless I were worried about office pals getting screwed over by my hasty departure. I might tough it out for them, if I wanted to remain friends outside the workplace.

Or unless I really wanted a good reference.

That said, my last employer would not give a reference, good or bad, for former employees. They would only confirm hire date, termination date, and ending salary. They were worried about getting sued by disgruntled former employees.

Most employers won't in this day and age. They want to know if you were fired or not, and they will confirm when you worked there. Nothing more.

Yep. So it really doesn't matter, burned bridges or not. If she wasn't fired it will be the same reference check with or without a 1 month notice.

Only when there are more jobs than workers (or you have your own business, then YOU'RE the slave owner)

When workers outnumber available jobs by multiple times, the corporate masters have you bent over a barrel.

I guarantee you that bullshit 'give us your facebook password or we won't hire you/we'll fire you' is going to be a standard thing at the workplace in a few years, unless it's outlawed

...leaving on bad terms due to their policy of needing one month's notice.

'bad terms'
?
like what does that mean, they won't be sending her a christmas card?

i think it means she won't be able to go back there and get a job in the future, i know where i work they assign a code if you leave/are laid off and depending on the code , if you ever apply for a job here in the future, you have no chance with certain codes. other codes, you are on a level field with other applicants. and i would assume there is a code where you get preference over outside applicants, but i don't know that for sure

unless they are going to come to your home and p00p in your fishtank, i wouldn't worry about it too much
