If all your computers have NT or win2k, then use net send at command prompt is the simplest way.
 
I never liked Winpopup because you always have to run it and it doesn't automatically start up. There's no way to make it run in the background. I always liked just using AOL IM as long as you have a permanent connection to the internet... ICQ is also really good. I'm not sure what there is available for just a local connection besides Winpopup and the Novell Client. Try going to CNET and doing a search there. They have all kinds of freeware and shareware proggies. 🙂
