"Wednesday Commodore USA announced that it will revive its ancient-yet-classic Commodore 64 all-in-one keyboard computer for the holiday season. The compact rig won't receive any visual improvements whatsoever, but will instead retain the original beige, blocky design seen back in the 1980s. Commodore said that the release is in response to an overwhelming demand from former Commodore users."

Stoked about the idea of an updated C64, not stoked about the $475-$1000+ price tag estimates.

Wow.. i don't think i've ever heard of something so cool and yet so stupid all at the same time before. The idea of the C-64 being back on the market is awesome. To this day I still love the Commodore 64 and every now and then i'll pull out an emulator just to play around. However... is this really going to be a C64? I don't know anything about the cpu and graphics they are putting into this thing... is it going to run the same basic OS that the old C64 did? Will the classic video games still work with it, or will they be building a whole new library of software for this? Nostalgia makes this seem really cool and interesting.. but my common sense thinks it's ridiculous.

Unless I'm somehow mistaken, it's an all in one PC in an old-style chassis. Rip out the guts of an old C-64, shove a netbook in it.

It seems cool in concept, but I think people will get sick of it pretty fast. If it was $50-100 it would be well worth it for the nostalgic value, but at $400+ (since it's a full-blown computer, after all) it's a bit hard to swallow. I think most people would rather buy a cheap laptop and run an emulator.

It would be really cool if it could do everything Wirelessly. Like transmit Video/Audio in HD/SD over the Air to your TV. That would give it cool Technical hook rather than just the Nostalgia angle.

It would be cool if it had an marketing angle other then the old C-64's casing. Like if it had the entire C-64 gaming collection included with it :)

Did you just happen to go blind the moment you opened this thread? I mean, read just the title...thats all, and you'll see that everything you said is just kinda...dumb...

Sorry if I seem harsh, but DAMN! That, and too much time in ATOT...

I reloaded a couple of C64 emulators over the weekend to play with, and decided that wasn't good enough so I pulled my C64 and C128 out of the garage and both power up and seem to work. I'm going to hook the 128 up this weekend with a drive and play some of the old games --- assuming, of course, the floppies still work which probably isn't the case!

The C64 was the golden era of gaming IMO.

It will not survive. The prices on what they are selling are too high, about $900 for a working unit. The cheaper units are strip down models without ram, drives, etc.

Meh. I still have my original c64. It still works. Or at least I think it does. It powers up but I don't have any RCA connectors that can mate with the RF modulator.

EDIT: Now I want to go to radio shack and grab the right connectors. If it still works, I might be playing legacy of the ancients tonight for the 100th time. And yes, whipper snappers, that is an RPG from 1987.

Link to the back cover. Heh! "Dungeon Slime Never Looked So Good!" Indeed.

You don't need an RF modulator for the C64. It has a composite out and it also had that 8 or 9 pin DIN connector and breaks out to stereo RCAs and a single video RCA connector. So as long as you have a monitor or TV with a composite input, you're fine.

I hooked both my C64 and C128 up to my U2410 this past weekend via the composite. :) I just have to get an adapter so I can plug an old set of PC speakers into them and I'm set.

if they release it with a retro gaming pack of at least 100 good games in im, if not they can go suck a dick. That price is plain stupid.

Something like this (there wasnt even 100 "good" games) but yeah, something else better be included or no one will buy this overpriced, oversized netbook.

There were a ton of great games. Commodore 64 was the Platform that many a great PC Game was first made on back then.

Atom desktops without displays on newegg range from $215 - $565 shipped I would expect this one to run at about a $100 premium: $315 to $665.

I mean $475-$1000 is how much "Commodore" wants for their Core 2 systems, they aren't going to charge that much for an atom based system.
