I am considering gonig all with mwave for everything to cut down on extra shipping costs.

barebones selection
ECS K7VTA3 (unsure which version) $67
amd xp 1500+ $134
256mb non ecc pc2100 $46
sony 52x cdrom $30
inwin s500 (300w ps) $78
total for the barebones is $355

adding on the following

maxtor 40gb DX6L040J2 $99
visiontek gf2 gts 64mb $137
2 80mm case fans $10
sb live 5.1 oem $35
3com winmodem $26

if the ecs mobo is the 1.x I may switch to something else.
Do you forsee any compatability issues with this system? I would like to try and keep things in the $700 area

I recently upgraded with the EPoX EP-8K7A...I like it a lot... very stable, easy to OC, pricewatch has it for $92. A bit more than the ECS, but I've never had any experiences with them... seems EPoX has a good reputation.

Looks like a nice system. Shouldn't be any problems. Check Crucial for that memory, they may be cheaper. They occasionally have free shipping.

I prefer newegg to mwave:

XP1600+ retail
Shuttle AK31A
Maxtor 40GB
Vistiontek GF2 GTS-V or Radeon LE
Evercase without PS
HEC 350W dual fan PS
Enermax 80mm fan
Hercules F2 soundcard
Zoom V.92 pci modem
Lite-on dvd-rom retail
Lite-on cd-rw retail

and Crucial ram from Crucial directly.

I just did a comparison with newegg and some substitutions for items not in stock/not sold

from newegg
inwin s500 $57
ecs k7s5a $57
visiontek gf2ti $127
amd xp 1600+ $144
maxtor 6L060J3 $121
zoom 56k v.92 $22
sony 52x $28
sblive oem $32
alpha pal8045u $47
shipping $50.42
from newegg that is a total of 685.42 shipped, and then ram from crucial (assuming free 2 day) is $46.59 (43.19 plus sales tax)

edit: stupid me
just realized that its a retail cpu, therefore i could skip the alpha and save $47 (this isn't a build for me, so it'll be running at stock speed)

with the removal of the alpha - it would be approx $638.42+46.59

You'd have to see what others think about the card, but you could get a Radeon 7500 cheaper than the GF2.... However, I do not know which one is the better preformer.

budget up to a point, trying to get the best value for money, figured that a low end amd xp cpu is still a good start, didn't even consider a duron.

<< if its budget get duron 1.1ghz costs like $30 >>

$30 only can buy a Duron 700.
Where do you see 1.1 for $30?

Well on newegg they have an ati radeon 7500 for about $119 (saving money over the visiontek) but I too am noy sure which is the better performer. I myself own an aiw radeon, but ati has always had a lack of driver updates, which made me think of gonig for a gf2.

I figure the general use of this computer will be for some gaming, its intent is to be a christmas gift as an upgrade from a p200, so they probably won't even know what to do with the new system when they get it. :)
