If you guys wouldn't mind taking a look at this system I pulled together on Newegg....

DYNAPOWER Metis Series Beige/Light Blue ATX Mid Tower Case with 430W Power supply
Model "CS-I3ALB.701" -RETAIL
$29.00

ASUS "K8N-E Deluxe" NVIDIA nForce3 Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL

$119.00

AMD Athlon 64 2800+, 512KB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor - Retail
$127.00

Corsair Value Select (Dual Pack) 184 Pin 512MBx2 DDR PC-3200 - OEM
Speed: DDR400(PC3200)
Cas Latency: 2.5
$146.27

NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, Black, Model ND-3500A BK, OEM
$68.00

I already have a 200GB WD HD from BF @ OM for $50.00
and a Mad Dog FX5200 Video card also from BF @ CompUSA for $30.00

Total = $596

How's the price?
How's the quality of the parts?
Would this system be future proof till '06?
Is this a good system for doing some video editing (not going to play any games, so got a cheap video card)?
I needed a mobo with IEEE1394 for my minidigital camcorder (figured it would be easy to transfer the video)
Any misc. recommendations....

Thanks in advance!

P.S. This is my first post on AT, sorry if I made any mistakes.

Desperately need a better PSU.

Buy a cheap-o Antec or Enermax, or Sparkle even.

Anything made by them is worlds better then that cheap PoS included with that case.

ive got a 5200 ultra, and it barely does the job. forget halo, doom3, or hl2 at any resolution above 640x480. and it wont run far cry at all. and you need a better power supply for sure.

otherwise, good selection. if youre not a heavy gamer, the vid card wont matter.

The video card is decent, but I'd say go with at least a 9600XT.
I run Far Cry at 800x600, medium settings, with a GeForce2 MX400, PCI version nonetheless, and get roughly 40fps average.
I have an A64 3000+, and 512MB of ram. Basically, for a little while, you can run new games on it with decent performance, but not long.

Certainly you need a much better case and power supply, I would recommend this case:

It's an excellent deal, considering the fact that it's an Antec, with an Antec PSU. If you want something a bit flashier, look at these:

For a power supply, these are good:

Totally agree...
I just bought a Rosewill 9600xt from Newegg.com over the weekend, and stock its 500core/600Memory, and I oc'ed it to 576/750! link (It's $105 more than the one you picked, but definitely worth it. If you cheap out on the video card, you'll always be thinking how much faster your machine could be with a decent vid card, while you are playing games with it. Also, you might consider getting an AMD 64 3000+ with the 90nm version. It's worth it, cause this processor just runs cooler. I think this would mean socket 939 ($129), and it might save you $25 going with socket 754, but I think that its definitely worth it for the cooler processor ( and it's only $25 more at newegg for this processor, $35 more with board listed above ). So, for $120-140, you don't kick yourself 6 months later, and say, why didn't I get a faster machine?

Edit: my system is an AMD Barton 2500+ (oc'ed to 2205 Mhz, 3200+ levels, but FSB 176 ). I originally only bought the CPU, mobo ( MSI K3VT ( apollo 133A chipset )), 256 MB RAM, case ($40), and the total was only $300 (with my gf2 MX 64). Since then, I have added 256 MB more ram ($60), RAD 9600XT for only $135. for a total of about $500.

Edit: if you want to match the system I got back then, it's even cheaper now...
board
memoryX2
CPU
Case
Video Card(optional)
Total $280
with video card, $415
=killer system (yea its not A64, but I like my system!)

I love the suggestions guys, really, thanks for the input......but I'm on a real tight budget. The goal is to keep it under $600; and as much as I know I need a new power supply; how long will this one last?
