Just putting this together this week, anything you would do differently? Suggestions?

1.2GHz TBird CPU
Either a FOP32/38 will have both
MSI K7T Pro 2A motherboard
256MB PC133 Micron CAS3
60GB Maxtor 7200RPM ATA100
64MB CL GeForce 2 GTS
Quadzilla sound with Yamaha 5 Speaker Surround
10x E-IDE DVD
16x E-IDE Yamaha Lightspeed CD-RW
Hauppage WinTV Theater
Either WinME or Win2K
Enermax 430w Power Supply
Addtronics 7896A Full Tower
21" Acer 211c Professional Series

The only thing I might end up changing here pretty quick is the motherboard to one of the new 133a boards. Dont really wanna mess with the drivers and such, and I heard with the new boards there is no need to.

Thanks

Fop 38 is very noisy, I used one for about a minute, couldn't stand it,
went back to an orb.

The noise on the FOP32 is OKAY and tolerable. You might want to get teh Toshiba 12X DVD.

Why don't you go for the 75GXP for your 60Gb?

Oh, forgot to add. Win2000 all the way! ;)

Sounds like you're putting a TON of money into it, I'd go ahead and put 512MB in it. (as long as you're going 2000)

I'd also switch the video card. Go with a Radeon 64mb if you want visual quality or bump you Geforce to a Pro or Ultra if you want speed. Either way the GTS doesn't seem like a good option to me right now.

pillage,

Cash brotha, cash... I was scoping the 75GXPs and for the price the 60GB Max seemed like the better deal, is the GXPs that much faster?

whitedog.... you do know that is a drink dont you? whitedog that is :)
one vote for win2K... will bump the RAM to 512MB, gottcha

MGMorden... I have had both of them, and just sold the 64MB Radeon. I did like the visuals hard to beat, but love the GeForce's raw speed... was contemplating an ultra, but with NV12 or whatever it is due out in a few months.... I think I can wait

I would opt for a Taisol 744 HSF if you want that sucker quiet, if you want it even quieter then replace the fan with a panaflow. The quietest combo ever!

"the 38 is INSANELY LOUD!!!! Piece of Junk!"

Ummmm...the FOP38 is a heatsink, it makes no noise. If the fan is too loud, just use a quieter fan. If you thought it was too loud, how does that make it a "piece of junk"? The FOP38 performs very well.

I would suggest the switch to a KT133A board, they will allow some high FSB speeds. I just saw a site the other day (forgot the link) that had a thunderbird running a 178FSB(356DDR)! I would also suggest Win2K...much more stable than Win9X. Also, it seems that all the new 1.2ghz Athlons are unlocked...

Cons:
If you are spending all that money might as well get Cas2 ram.
Rather get a Alpha Pal6035, aka "The trusty alpha" when all else fails....
I would have got an IBM Deskstar 75 HD.
And the speakers hehe, Klipsh Pro Medias.

Nice system, what kinda mouse and keyboard? I suggest a nice cordless set.

chiwawa626,

Had the earlier Klipsh, but IMHO I like the way the Yamaha's sounded. Have not heard the Pro Media's. The microsoft Intellimouse thingy and the microsoft natural keyboard. Would be interested in some cordless? Reccomendations! Also points taken on the other advice, thanks :)

The only cordless set of keyboard/mouse I can think of which is worth buy is the Logitech itouch desktop set. I have it myself and it responds just as well as a regular keyboard without the cords to deal with. I would recommend it if you're thinking about cordless

bacillus,

Sheezz, knew someone had to bring up this little fact :( Anyhow, with 10K IDE Drives only a few months out, cannot even begin to see the logic in it, let alone the expense... and damn it would be really expensive, cause I would have to have the 15K stuff, know what I mean ;)

Thanks rhinox99

looks great :)
the ram will probably run CAS 2 no probs anyways
a KT-133A bpoard would be good but they r hard to find ATM
the FOP-32 is not too noisy at all, and provides cooling almost on the level of the alpha at like 1/2 the price :)

Careful with the Win2k, MSi and Maxtor ata100 combo... I forgot the exact culprit, but you are going to have to install it as 'standard pc' and give up the ACPI at the os level. Otherwise, your computer will cut the power from the hd before it finishes writing from cache, resulting in a non bootable computer because of a bad registry. After the install you can enable APM in Win2K...

I'd maybe reconsider the Yamaha burner. The February Maximum PC slams this burner, only scoring it with a 4. I have a friend who has this drive and has said that he's had all the problems stated in the article. They rated the Plexwriter 12/10/32S and the Ricoh 12/10/32/8 both Kick Ass. The Ricoh is a burner and DVD drive as well. I have the TDK 16X burner, and it smokes! No problems with it yet, even burns 12x media at 16x.

Good luck
