Just got my AK31A board in and all the other parts:

Shuttle AK31A $85
T-Bird 1GHZ 266FSB(She's got potential 😉)
Volcano 6CU $13 (already have a tube of ArticSilver, so no need to get another)
Crucial 256MB PC2100 $30 (she really does do Cas2!)
Visiontek Geforce 2 GTS 32MB DDR-$65 (cheap and somewhat fast!)
IBM 40GB 7.2kRPM drive-$95
floppy $9
micrsoft natural PRO kB-$32
intelli-mouse optical-$24
KDS 17inch flat-screen monitor-$160 (onsale at local officedepot store)

my total including tax and SH-$696 😀

Cheap, sure.. Fast.. err.. My GF2 GTS 32 megger is certainly showing its age, as it has been for a while now.

Might as well throw another 256mb of ram in there too since its so cheap..

well its fast for its $65 price range, the only other cards that I'ved found at newegg.com for $65 were a handfull of GeForce 2MX 400, and a Radeon 7200 64MB SDR.

Question: How faster will my box be with another 256MB stick? I'm only going to be web-surfing and gameing mainly (i.e. quake III, unreal, max payne).

I don't think you really need another 256mb for gaming and web surfing.
The GTS for 65$ is just fine, I think it's just plain dumb to spent over 200$ for a GF3, wait 3 months and get it for 100$😀

Thats the plan.😉

If you give Q3A an additional 256mb of ram.. it WILL eat it.

Also, I noticed that although 256mb was great, 384-512 is the sweetspot.

That VisionTek is a GTS-V right? Its a great card. In case you didn't know, you need to raise the clock to 200/333 from the 175/286 default for it to perform @ normal GTS speeds.

Nice hunt...BUT

<< Volcano 6CU $13 (already have a tube of ArticSilver, so no need to get another) >>

This thing is very loud. Has a high pitched noise with a 60mm fan, Try and find a HSF which uses a 80mm fan swhich will spin slower poduce less noise and more air flow.

Also this may be not enough pwer supply. Do a pricewatch search for antec 1040 it has a 400 watt PS which is almost nessasary for this board. Can be had for around 80 @KDcomputers
