Comment on this rig

Comment, and do it fast. It's now 16:03 as I'm typing this, and I want to have the stuff ordered before 21:00 (makes sure that I have the videocard, motherboard and powersupply here tomorrow or the day after).

AMD Opteron 165 boxed
DFI LanParty Ultra-D
G.SkiLL DDR500 @ 3-4-4-8 (250 MHz)
XFX nVidia GeForce 7800GT (the one with the fancy coloured lights)
Antec SmartPower 2.0 500W (with a whopping 38A on the 12V rail )
Arctic Silver 5
Current case so people won't steal/masturbate over my new pc

Well, will it make me happy? Current specs are:
AMD Athlon 1400+ @ 1467 MHz
OEM PC2100 @ 2.5-3-3-7
Asus cheapo mobo (the old one died)
OEM 280W PSU
nVidia MX440 16 MB confused:[/i])

Well, I ordered last night (couple of busy nights the nights before, so I could't order). I'll probably get the first batch Friday or Saturday (motherboard, PSU, graphics card, AS5), then I'll probably get the next batch the following Friday or Saturday (CPU), and the Monday or Tuesday after that, I'll get my memory, and the building can beginulate!

Like it but would reccomend Fortron, Seasonic, or Enermax as some other choices. A 500W enermax liberty should do you fine. Or something from the Fortron line too.

Vegitto, All I have to say is that if yo uare upgrading from an Athlon be prepared to be blown away with the performance difference.

Congrats on the newPC. All you specs, including your PSU, look good to me.

One suggestion, which is more of an opinion on human nature than anything. If there is any component that you could upgrade for $50 or so, I would suggest you eat the cost and do it. There's nothing worse than buying something like a pc and not being totally satisified with all the components. I'd rather spend an extra $50-$100 bones and get something I'll be happy with than always wonder what it would be like if I had.

Looks good to me. And I think that PSU is fine, in fact DON'T get a seasonic with that motherboard, there is an incompatiability problem (see other posts)

Edit: just noticed the gskill, some peoplace have had problems. Get Crucial or OCZ.

Looks great. What are your hard disks like? Maybe also spring for a SATA 7200 or 10K RPM hard disk with 8 MB+ cache to go along with everything. It's nice to have disks that can try to keep up.

Nice Rig. One question, I've never understood how DDR500 RAM will work on a MOBO that needs DDR400. I know I'm just misinformed but if anyone feels like explaining that would be great.

RAM rated for any particular bus speed (like 500) will 99.999% of the time run just fine at a slower bus speed (like 400). SDRAM doesn't choose its own speed to run at. Its operating speed is always based on the bus speed of the CPU, either at a 1:1 ratio or some other ratio that the user may choose.

Basically, Antec is my only choice, as I have made a deal with a mate of mine to take his Antec P180 from him in a couple of months. Also, Fortron and Seasonic PSU's are worth their weight in gold around here..

Well, thanks. I would of course like to get an Opteron 170, or an XFX 7800GTX, or some nicer RAM, but to tell you the truth, I'm 15 years old now, and I've been slaving my ass off for the last 2 years. I really can't afford anything more.

Buying DDR500 only guarantees that you will achieve DDR500 speed, it shouldn't be assumed that it will go much higher than that. The DDR500 the OP is talking about sometimes reaches very high OCs, sometimes not. There are many factors involved besides the inherent potential of the RAM, which varies even from batch to batch.

Does your current case have sufficient airflow? Otherwise, good choices. Like lytalbayre said, you will notice a tremendous performance gain from the new parts. I went from an AthlonXP 2400+ to an Athlon64 3200+ and it was just a huge difference. Now that the Athlon64 is overclocked....well, it can't get much better than having a 3800+ for $152.

Meh.. It has 2x 80mm fans.. I'm saving up for the new cooling system and the HD's. I want two of those OCZ phase-changers (or one with a dual head, for that matter), and a case that fits it. That case must have at least 6 internal drive bays, a front 120mm intake and 2 120mm exhausts. (I'm thinking of modding an Antec P180).
