Commander Keen fans chime in

I was poking around teh intraweb today and discovered a big fansite where you can download all of the original games for dos free: (legally, apparently)

http://dosclassics.com/keen/dl.php?file=public

Here's the official games thread. If you're not familiar with Keen, check out the Wikipedia entry. If you are familiar with Keen but a little rusty, check out 3DRealm's A Look Back at Commander Keen (check out the last page for some fun downloads, including some of the original games!). If you haven't read the hilarious "10 Years On" parody, check it out here. Here's another fansite with the game downloads organized a bit better. Also check out the Public Commander Keen forum.

Any other Keen fans here? 🙂

AHHH!! AHHH!! AHHH!H!!!!! AHAH!!! AQHH!H!! AHH-*ASPLODES*

Oh god, I haven't played Commander Keen in years! I'm PMing this thread to myself so I don't miss it!

 for commander Keen!

BTW...does anyone else think that Jimmy Neutron show is just a ripoff of keen? That's what it looks like to me, but I guess having not really watched it, there's probably more 😛

They give jimmy neutron a lot more powers than our good pal billy ever got.

I have all of the keens... but I keep forgetting how to spell balboaboba or whatever it is to get into keen6. Dosbox rules btw.

 😀

Are these games now freeware? If so, if someone wants to volunteer up some hosting, I can upload them all for you guys when I get home.

I figured out how to get the games to run on my Intel Mac using DOSBox. You can probably do it through Parallels/MS-DOS 6.22 as well, but you can jump right in this way:

1. Download DOSBox and the Keen games you want. You will want to download the Mac OS X PPC version of DOSBox (works fine under Rosetta):

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1

2. Open the .dmg and drag the DOSBox app to your Applications folder

3. Unzip the Keen game to the desktop (keen1 is the name of the folder in my example)

4. Open DOSbox; it will take a minute to load up initially. When it's finished you'll be at the Z:\ prompt

5. Mount the game folder as C:\ by typing in this command: (replace "keen1" with the name of your folder)

mount c ~/Desktop/keen1

6. Switch to the C:\ by typing in: C:

7. Do a dir to see if the game files are inside (there should be an install.exe or similar executable)

8. Type in install.exe and hit enter to start installation; follow the instructions from there

After it's installed, I just had to type in keen1.exe to load the game up, complete with graphics and sound! Unfortunately I don't see an option to go fullscreen in DOSBox, so you'll probably have to use Parallels if you want to do fullscreen gaming. But hey, it works and I'm happy! 🙂
