Anyone else pick this up?

C&C was always one of my favorite games, and I'm now totally hooked on Red Alert 2. I'm so glad they left the core of the game intact (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). The new units are a lot more intelligent... it's a lot harder for any one type of unit to dominate the game.

Things do get a bit silly in this version (squids and dolphins as fighters, for instance... not to mention the mind control madness). But overall, I love it.

Thoughts?

I just played the Allies and the game is too easy, those prism tank really mash things up when you have a squad of twelve on the attack. I haven't tried the Soviets yet but if it isn't any harder then i'll be disapointed.

PS. I completed Starcraft and the Broodwars expansion so i think i have had the practice, when you start a new game it's all easy.

Not Bad first impressions though.

Well, the graphics are about the same (except for the movies - holy cow they're getting very close to DVD quality!). I like the control layout a ton better (for example instead of having 2 long lists, one for units, and one for buildings, you now have buttons at the top that let you select troops, vehicles, buildings, and air/sea vessels). The AI seems to be a little better (not so much the enemy AI - your own troops don't do quite so many dumb things. If you play the game you know what I mean ;)).

Essentially it looks like what the earlier versions "should" have been (although the C&C series has always been among my favorite games). If you're a C&C fan it's worth picking up, but don't expect anything too different.

Is the build queue improved? That's always been the biggest beef I've had with C&C and the main reason I prefer Total Annihilation.

Yes! You can build multiple things at once (it puts a number in the corner of the item being built to show how many are left in the queue).

I haven't maxed out the queue yet but I've had close to 10 items queued at once.
