EA Strikes Back!

But will BF4 be free 2 play? I'm thinking no, because they know they can charge $60 up front, $50 for premium, and still get cash shop sales for hastened unlocks.

well that's unfortunate, but oh well, c&c has been dead/life support since 3 anyway.

I thought General 2 was coming out. Looks like either this is generals 2 or there will be two games based on frostbite 2. One game free to play and the other not so much. Either way, this looks great. I've been waiting a long ass time for this.

Actually this is going to replace Generals 2 according to Ars

The in-development game formerly known as Command & Conquer Generals 2 will no longer be a retail product, but will launch next year as the "first of many free offerings" on the new platform, which will grow to encompass "Red Alert, Tiberium, and beyond," EA said in a statement.

So they pretty much have killed C&C as we knew it, looks like they will all be f2p in the future

*edit* to add a bit more context

“At launch, the focus will be on multiplayer as we are currently focused on building a fun, high quality RTS experience that we want to get in your hands as soon as possible," EA VP and General Manager Jon Van Carnegiea told IGN. "From there, we will continuously evaluate additional content based on a variety of player feedback.”

Man, this makes me kind of uneasy. I can't imagine a c&c game being any good in a free to play format. If you want the whole game, you will end up paying more than $60 I am willing to bet. It just sounds so stupid and cheap, "free to play". Free = ghetto cheap/half ass and makes me think of a partial game with partial effort put into it. Like, they made a crappy version of what the game should have been and then release for free only to nickel and dime you to death in the long haul.

Maybe this F2P crap is a way to fight pirates. If its free then theres nothing to steal, right?

From EA's C&C forum:
I know this is something else – Something many of you didn’t expect and most of you probably will instantly counter with “RIP C&C” or “PIEP CENCORED PIEP”. My immediate first thought after hearing this the first time was similar. But after thinking a bit more about it, I realized that this is how games will change in the near future – This is a chance to bring the franchise to players that were always afraid of spending 60 dollars upfront as they didn’t know if they would enjoy an RTS. A chance to create a supported platform for Command & Conquer that will be influenced by how you guys are playing it and what you’re asking for. It is also planed to revisit the Red Alert and Tiberium universe in the future.
They are beginning to know that they are fucking over their established fanbases, so they start saying things like this up front in order to make it look like they're doing the right thing.

Bringing the franchise to people who are hesitant to pay for it requires ruining it for those who are not hesitant. But they don't care, it's all about the numbers.

Disappointing news to me if correct. I really liked Generals and Zero Hour. I was hoping for a good single player game. However, as someone else stated, things went downhill rapidly after C and C 3. Not really interested in online, especially for an RTS.

Unfortunately, it seems like a true single player game is almost a thing of the past. I understand why the companies are doing it, because they want a continuous income stream. However, I refuse to play any game that does not have a single player component, so very little is left for me to look forward to. Torchlight 2 and Borderlands are on the horizon, but after that ???? Guess I will have to go to GOG and start playing the classics.

Meh... yeah C&C is gone. The last RTS I enjoyed was (and I still like it mind you) Star Wars: Empire at War, by Petroglyph Games, itself formed by ex - Westwood Studios employees. And Universe at War: Earth Assault wasn't bad at all either.

When I completed C&C 3 (which I did liked) I thought "well ok, it was good enough, but I can't see where this can go from this point in the future, I think I played the truly last C&C game". I never bothered even trying C&C 4, I watched some game-play videos of it on YouTube and thought "no thanks, not for me". I never really liked Generals to start with, so Generals 2 wouldn't have created any excitement for me. To me, C&C's soul resided in C&C 1, C&C 2 (Tiberian Sun), Red Alert 1, Red Alert 2 vanilla (excluding Yuri's Revenge) and some of C&C 3... that's about it.

That's about it and... really, I think it was enough, I've had my fill, no need to keep trying at reviving it, it's dead, let it go EA, please.

i'm not familiar with any of the f2p rts out there, can anyone explain what pay model they use (pay for immediate access to upgrades vs unlock over time/use, pay for cosmetic or variant sidegrades, pay for higher content/maps)?

i cant really imagine how you would nickel and dime generals without screwing up a lot of balance.

RA was the last real C&C and RA2 was the last fun one. This franchise has been dead to me for a long time.

Relic took over the RTS market back in the late 90's.

Not sure about balance issues either gorobei. Though I guess my days of modding another C&C game is over.

Their fan base was back in 1995 - 17 years ago. They've been trying to reposition their product ever since with some failures and successes. Red Alert was an obvious success, Generals, and Tiberium Wars. C&C4 and Renegade where flops.

i remembered i liked Renegade back in those days... the idea was great and some of the stuff they made in the game was pretty cool too. The MP was ahead of its time, now it would be such a success IMHO, switching classes, destroying enemies Harvesters, etc. And being able to see the enemies and structures that were part of the C&C universe was cool (seeing a real scale hand of nod or those obelisc, or seing some Orca aircraft in the sky)

its a pity it didnt work out as it could have...

I wish they would just re-release the first C&C games but only with updated graphics, I would definitely buy them. I'll never forget the fun I had playing the C&C Tiberium series and Red Alert.
