Is there any cure to the Memory glitches/freezes caused by Com Ports not closing properly in Windows (9.X thru XP Pro)? Is the problem caused by Windows or the hardware involved (usually the modem)?

Follow up: Once a Com Port closes (or attempts to) I notice a drop in Memory availability that doesn't seem to get released by the system - is there a tweak to reduce the latency?
