Coming back to AMD

Had a "screw it" moment last night and purchased the following:

I currently run a GTX 1080 Ti and a XB271HU 1440P monitor. I've been wanting to go Ultrawide for quite a while now. Ever since the 3840x1600 Freesync monitors were released, I have been drooling over them. Finally decided to jump ship and go back to AMD. For a while I did have a 3440x1440 monitor, but it didn't have GSYNC or Freesync and was only 60hz. This Acer XR382CQK has Freesync and 75Hz. It also solves my other issue with 3440x1440 monitors; I felt that it wasn't tall enough to really "envelop" you in the game you're playing. Combination of 3840x1600 resolution and being 38 inches vs. the standard 34" of ultra-wide monitors should solve that. Also for games that don't support ultra-wide resolutions, you can use 2560x1600 resolution, slightly better than on a 3440x1440 where you end up with 2560x1440.

I haven't used AMD extensively since the old 7970 came out. Looking forward to going back to AMD. As far as going from a 1080 Ti to a Vega 64 goes: Both of these cards are fully capable of running 3840x1600 resolution. I've always felt that if you simply turn off the FPS meter while playing games it allows you to just play the game and stop worrying about what FPS you are running at. Freesync and G-SYNC help immensely with this. I do feel that AMD has a lot of untapped potential in the drivers for Vega 64/56, it's going to be interesting to see what they come up with in the next few months as far as driver performance goes. I'm very excited to get the new monitor and to play around with Vega 64. Can't wait to play games on the 38" 3840x1600 monitor.

At the end of the day though this is probably considered a side-grade at best to most enthusiasts out there. I honestly don't care, and this is really what I enjoy doing. Playing with new hardware and diving into niche hardware segments (how many other rigs have you seen with 3 nvme drives in them?).

I'll be selling my MSI Gaming X 1080 Ti. Will likely keep the XB271HU for lan party use. I recently upgraded to X299 and a 7820X. Selling my 6700K, motherboard, ram, and case to a friend. I may see if he's interested in the 1080 Ti :)

I'm confused??? Why would you step down from a gtx 1080 ti which is the fastest consumer gpu available right now?

I explained this in the OP. 3840x1600 - no GSYNC displays available. I also said I wanted to play around with AMD hardware.

Nice choices, I too want to go FreeSync + Ultrawide, I think the time is near if I can land a Vega 56 at the right price.

I currently have a 40" 4K but I use ultrawide resolutions for a number of games.

I ended up cancelling this order. I'm either going to wait on someone else to be the guinea pig with Vega and Ultrawide or wait for some of the announced ultra wide monitors to become available. Someone on another forum informed me of a 3440x1440 200hz quantom dot display with gsync coming out soon.

Haha, sometimes those impulse buys can bite us... at least you were able to cancel :)

He explained in the OP why he was doing it so your post has no relevance to his... unless you had another agenda on your mind.

Either way good for OP looks like fun stuff to play around with.
