Had a ticket at work this morning to clean up several computers, updates, defrag, registry cleanup etc. These are non standard PCs, so we don't have current images for them.

Obviously, I'm not going to sit at each desk all day and run updates and optimizations. So, I figured I'd VPN in from home, minimize the RDPs and go on about my business.

Since the work VPN client does not work under a 64-bit OS, I've been using a Windows 2000 virtual box to connect to the VPN. This has been fine for months. Now, for some reason, Virtual Box keeps crashing. Come to think of it, I think it might be the new VB that was released a few days ago, 2.2.4.xxxx. Hmm . . . annoying to say the least.
 
I've been using the Virtual XP in Windows 7 to connect to my VPN at work. I didn't want to dirty my clean Windows 7 install with our client lol. I never tried Virtual Box, is it any good?

Yeah, but I only have two XP Pro licenses, 1 for my laptop and 1 I bought for my desktop before Vista 64. Both are in use. Windows 2000 has no activation or restrictions like XP does.

Plus, I can run it with 512MB of RAM and its blazing fast. 🙂

Shrug, I've only used it a little bit since I updated.

Edit - And its crashed again.

Edit - And again . . .maybe I should slap the VPN on my XP VB and see if that runs any better.
 
Are you using VB in Windows or Linux? I think it's more optimized for Linux so maybe give it a try there if that's not what you're doing. The 2.1 version has been very stable on my Linux server. I was running vmware server 2.0 before but it was too unstable. vmware server 1.0 is perfect but is very fussy about the distro, it wont install on any distro. 2.0 is same, but will install on newer ones.

As for licenses, who really cares, right? Most people don't even HAVE licenses at all for home. 😛 And yeah I still like to use win2k for simple lightweight applications as it's such low resource using.
 
Seems to be more stable on the Mint 7 test I installed thursday night. Hasn't crashed once.


If I can just get my Garmin Forerunner to work under Mint or XP VB, I'm set to take Windows off my main machine totally. Its why I put Mint on this box.
