I worked as an internet service tech in the North Houston area for 3 years.

I worked for a few years on Starfleets Diulitium matrix!! Damn we were always cracking dilithium crystals right an left. But damn you wouldn`t believe gthe speeds we were getting well over a million Joules up and down!!

Splitters are fine for a TV signal, they're awful for cable internet. I had to have a dedicated line run to my cable modem when I got cable internet, it wouldn't work off a splitter.

In actuality you don`t know what your talking about!
You internet service provider probably just sucked!

Feed goes into a two-way split. One leg goes straight to CM. Other leg goes --> surge protector --> amp --> 6-way split --> 4x HDHR tuners, 2x HVR-2250 tuners.

Cable surge protectors can insert trash into the signal. If your cable line is properly grounded outside, you do not need a surge protector inline.
Yeah...that's why it's only the TV part that goes through the surge protector. I noticed a long time ago that all surge protectors seemed to kill the signal and make the modem unusable...even if I had the strongest signal possible going into the protector and made sure to use a surge protector that specifically mentioned it could be used for a cable modem.

I live in an apartment and I'm *not* sure if it's properly grounded outside. I used to feel a zap sometimes when touching the coax. Just to make sure it's grounded, I'll probably connect the ground screw from that first splitter to the ground pin on an electrical socket.

Don't do what I did.

Why are your papers not being kept refridgerated as the box suggests? Is that shoe box from the shoes from this thread? If the receipt is in that box, I suggest returning them to Wal-Mart ASAP.

Thanks for the responses/suggestions.

Maybe this evening after work, I will look at the outside connections myself to see if anything looks strange and if not, I'll call Comcast out to have them figure it out. If they were working on the neighbors' stuff and put something in between us, I'm probably not likely to find it nor do I have the desire to try when they are getting paid to do just that.

For the most part, cable tv and internet in an apartment are crap (unless the apartments are somewhat new). The cheapest bidder usually gets the contract to wire the building, and they usually use the cheapest crap cable available.

In your case, yea, use some kind of inline surge protector to protect your equipment.
