ComCRAP is degrading HD channels to make room for more channels?

Uh, the satellite providers do it to. HD is non-existent. Everything will be "HD-Lite"

Quantity > Quality to 90% of bozos out there. The same type that watch letterbox movies in full screen because they don't like the black bars.

DirecTV did it with their mpeg2 channels. Since they launched the new satellites, their mpeg4 channels look significantly better and they are phasing out the mpeg2 broadcasts.

I have SD dishnetwork and it looks better than those HD Comcrap screenshots!

DirecTV were the same ones claiming they had Sci-Fi Channel HD coming when Sci-Fi hadn't even thought about moving to HD transmissions. They were quite surprised 😛

Half of Dish's stuff is up-sampled content anyway. Well actually it's not as bad as it used to be now that I think about it.

SatelliteGuys.com has good tech forums and some real propeller heads monitoring real time bandwidth of channels. Kinda funny, but they catch them when the networks degrade channel quality to make room for more channels.

Why doesn't comcast just delete the 8 or so worthless garbage hd channels like INHD, mojo, mhd... those channels play the same worthless crap over and over again

F***ing racists! :|

Meh, that guy's screen shots look like ass. I have Comcast HD, and it's no where as bad as the guy made it out to be. He's comparing DVD w/ VCD in those screen caps.

You Sir, are on crack. Mojo is the best free HD channel. It broadcasts live NBATV games in HD!

DirecTV still reduces the quality on the newer channels as well. They broadcast at 1280x1080 instead of 1920x1080.

Now whether its better to reduce resolution or use heavier compression is a debate I'll leave for the folks over at avsforum.

I didn't say that DirecTV wasn't still reducing the resolution on their mpeg4 channels. Just that they look significantly better than the old MPEG2 channels that started the "HD-Lite" mini-controversy.

Seconded, MoJo HD FTW!

I haven't noticed any loss in image quality (I'm on Comcast). I press pause on the DVR and it looks the same as it always did. They should get rid of some of the useless analog channels and get ready to switch over to mpeg-4 from mpeg-2.

Thirded to an extent. Mojo is great for showing the occasional NBA and NHL game. Aside from that I hardly find myself coming across anything good on it.

For the most part, I skip that channel... but I do watch Three Sheets / Wall Street Warriors every once in a while late night when nothing else is on.

For the cable networks, the quality of HD (and all the other channels, for that matter) is highly dependent on what your local central office does.

Some COs have a fiber-optic backbone, and thus don't need to compress the channels that much. Some COs have older networks with a much lower bandwidth and thus have to compress the hell of channels. And the CO (generally) gets to choose which channels to compress, and by how much based on local demand. If they feel noone is watching the History channel, they can compress the crap out of it to make room for more channels or allot more bandwidth for a more popular channel.

So this is very much a YMMV thing.

So person A prefers
10 HD channels
40 SD channels

And person B prefers
20 HD channels (more compression)
30 SD channels

And you say person B is sacrificing quality for quantity? Seems to me that they're sacrificing quality for quality - they lose some quality on some channels to gain quality on other channels. If the only channels you watch are included in the first 10, then your perspective is quite different from the guy who only watches channels in the second 10. I don't fault him for wanting to see his channels in HD instead of SD, even if it comes at the expense of a modest loss of quality on the HD channels.

We barely have enough channels as it is. So what the hell are they going to do when almost all channels are HD??

At some point they will probably do away with analog cable.

I'm a bozo in category B.

Compressed HD is better than SD.

Regardless, once the analog spectrum is freed up, this will be less of an issue.

Comcast in NJ doesn't even give me Discovery HD, Comedy Central HD, or Sci-Fi HD. If getting those means sacrificing a bit of quality on the other HD channels, go for it.

They also do the occasional hour long HD film on things like extreme skiing and whatnot. Empty, but spectacular empty.
