Comcast won't let me cut the cord?

I told Comcast I want to cut my TV off before the next billing cycle starts which is in about 2 weeks. They said they can't do that, that I need to call the exact day I want my TV turned off and have them shut it off that day. I said what if by some random occurrence I am unable to get to a phone that day, then you guys get to bill me again for another month of an overpriced service I don't want. They said they can't put in a cancel date, that I need to call the exact day to have them turn it off. Does that sound right? That sounds off to me, like they should be able to do what I am asking without much trouble.

Not sure why I'm bothering, but of course they can and yes it is in the hope that you'll forget and then they can bill you for another cycle.

Do you tell your light switch a time in the future when you want it to turn off or do you wait until that time and turn it off? If this is done with software it probably isn't written to do things in the future and if they disconnect something in the box on your house they may not have a system for scheduling that far in advance.

When my friend's father passed away, he called Comcast to cancel his father's service and they said they couldn't do it because the service was in the father's name and they can only speak to him. My friend said you can either cancel it now and get your equipment back, or ignore me and never see it again, because ruining my dead father's credit rating isn't much of a threat. At that point the CSR managed to find a way.

The guy actually said they could only cancel it if they spoke to the person who's name was on the account. Even though my friend just told him he was dead. Talk about a script monkey.

Uhh, that sounds like bullshit to me. They will pro-rate. You got taken.

They will prorate. By talking you into delaying canceling you are paying more!

that's BS. Once while trying to get them to reduce their rates, I've threatened to cancel and scheduled a cancel date one day before my renewal. Went running back to them when they actually called my bluff and cancelled on said date (I survived 24 hrs w/o internet), but that's another story.

Call them back and try again.

I've done this. As everyone else has said, tell them to prorate you. If the CSR does not know what that means, ask for supervisor.

I know it's not what you're asking, but comcast really doesn't let you cut the cord. All of their internet plans require you to pay for a super-basic TV package of like 10 channels.

Yeah, they're taking you for a ride. This is a common tactic by retention departments. They try to make cancelling difficult in hopes that you just won't be bothered. Gotta be firm with them. Tell them you want it gone today and they'll pro-rate it like everyone else said.

Time Warner won't even let me cancel my cable tv in my apartment. They say they have to put something over the jack so it can't be used and so long as I'm using the jack for internet, they can't put the block on it. So I'm basically forced to pay for cable tv to have internet. I'm sure they must have the technology by the 21st century that they can get around this if they wanted to. But they don't.

Actually, I think you need to bring your box to them. When they get the box it is canceled.

I just looked into getting cable again. Cable with iNternet is $80 for year one and $160 or so for year 2. So, $120/month on average. So $1400 or so per year. WTF!

I already pay for internet but have a hard time swallowing the cost to get TV with it. And I only want cable for winter sports. Does the NFL or NCAA (basketball) have stream on the internet? I check the NFL and I think they have a deal where you can stream games ... once they end. So, no live streaming. probably due to contract limitations with TV companies.

Phone Jockey is paid depending on % of cancellations on his watch. You do it later, with someone else or anything other than cancelling He wins. How this is a business model is beyond me.
