Comcast Users: Need your opinion

So at the apartment I'm moving into the options are Comcast all flavors or 1.5 mb Qwest.

My girlfriend presently has the same Qwest package and it is a bit sluggish.

Unfortunately, I may have to get Comcast.

I bought a cable modem of ebay, a Motorola SBG940 (4 port/WirelessG, DOCSIS 2).

Looking at the just internet, up to 12 mb is $59 while up to 16 mb $67.

Then Internet+TV is $66. but it wasn't entirely clear whether it was 6 mb or 12 mb, information on the same page was conflicting. This seems to be a 12 month promotion. If I canceled after 12 months would I get any kind of fee?

Which would you choose? would the 12 mb vs 16 mb be a big difference, I thought I saw some where the uploads were different 384 vs 786 or some such, but I can't seem to find that now.

For just internet, since I have my own modem do I just call them and tell them the modem MAC and then I'm good to go, as in don't have to pay for installation.

For TV+Internet how does that work, is there an additional box or can I basically "install" myself again?

Any places for comcast deals, the places I've seen on google don't strike me as legit.

FYI

I just had Comcast over at my place earlier today to install cable/internet. I've always hated them, have had many, many battles with them while in Chicago. Unfortunately, they are the only option for what I need over here in Berkeley.

I provided my own modem--motorolla purchased from Comcast some years ago while in Chicago. It seems the modem is "locked" to the Chicago district, so they couldn't use it here. so, check your Ebay modem--I'd never heard of this before, but it could be b/c it was once the property of an ISP. I'll be looking at how to unlock it. I also have my own D-Link modem that I'm currently using

anyhoo, some more salient info for you. I also got the basic digital + internet for $66/month over 12 months. This was the best deal I found under their moving offers. I added $13/month for HD service with a nice motorolla DVR.

IIRC, the speed at this price was advertised at 5 mbps. my little "local area connection" icon down there in the right-hand corner is telling me 100mbps. Not sure how accurate that is...or what it really means in terms of real speed, but that's what it says. Haven't really downloaded/uploaded anything yet, but I don't do much of that anyway. I also had to have a completely new line installed, so it could be that I have a nice, clean, uninterrupted signal. Well, at least until my hippie neighbors start tapping into my line.....

oh, as for cancellation, I read that canceling at any time is no problem, as there is no term-minimum contract to begin with. However, if you choose to change any part of you service, I think it will revert the rest of your package to standard pricing, so keep an eye on that.

The modem is new in box, so if they try to pull that garbage with me, I'll give their rectum a service charge the size of my foot!

What is the total cost per month? Is there some bogus service fee or is that only if you're renting a modem?

I bought my modem brand new off Amazon.com, and it was on their approved list of modems. When the installer called in the serial number and MAC address their system rejected it due to "some error they had never seen before." So I had to rent one of their modems. Fuckers.

I have never had as many negative experiences with a single company as I've had with Comcast, and I've only been their customer for a couple of months. I really don't understand HOW a company could possibly suck so badly in everything they do. I just have to laugh at some of the experiences I've had, because I tell myself that there's no way they could screw up AGAIN, and they always do.

Personally, I would go with the slower service from anyone that isn't Comcast. The service is horribly unreliable, the support is even worse and just absolutely nothing is done correctly by them. If I was in range for DSL, I would have switched a long time ago.
I had a 2 hour phone call with an agent about me supposedly not paying my bill and as it turns out they had the completely wrong address for me. I sent in a check (as I knew the amount, my parents have the same package as I do) and according to my bank it cleared, but it wasn't placed on my account. The agent then tried to tell me I had to pay again over the phone with my debit card (yes, double pay). I had to threaten legal action before I could speak to anyone higher up than an untrained chimp, and even then the agent was borderline useless.
My connection still drops at random every 10 to 15 minutes. I've tried replacing the modem 3 times (since June) and working without a router to no avail. My "immaculate" signal numbers put my blame squarely on Comcast. If they went bankrupt tomorrow I wouldn't mind the dial up until someone else bought up the service.

Bwahahahahaha

Dude!!! He got 100mbps phat pipe.

The one I have at work says 1 Gbps! I even have a server that says 10 Gbps!!

Go easy man, that 100 mbps is because of the single port 10/100 mb switch in the modem. You actually have to log into the modem to see the cable connection speed.

Well I have Comcast and it's great. I don't really have any choice as to what speeds, but it's fast (http://www.speedtest.net/result/311737711.png).

The only down side is it's a tad on the expensive side. I pay about $130/month for internet and a digital TV package with HD, plus a DVR.

But other than that it's been great. I've been with them for 2 years here and had to call them 2 times about a signal issue. Otherwise it's been solid.

Me and my roommate have Comcast and I like it. http://www.speedtest.net/result/311209574.png

We have Internet, 3 HD DVR Boxes, and some premium channels with sports package. We split the $150/month bill. Been with them for over 2 years and the internet has been down only once (for a couple hours). I am thinking about switching the TV to DirecTV however, I did notice some of the HD Tv channels having lower quality recently (comcast bandwidth compression). I also want to get the Sunday Ticket package.

I got the Comcast Double Play(Internet/Cable) thru Circuit City. $66 month for 12 months plus $6 month for HD with free modem, $75 rebate for cable and $100 rebate for HD.

Hmm, maybe I should drop down to CC and see what they have to say.

Was there any kind of installation fee? Was the free modem just a plain cable modem or did it have a built in 4 port switch and Wireless?

Plan Motorola surfboard modem. There was an installation fee $30 but I got it waived.

Ok well I already bought the SBG940, so I'm planning on using that. Would Double Play come with a cable box or do I just plug right into the wall?

So the rates they advertise are with powerboost right? So 12 mb is really 12mb - powerboost (6mb). So its a 6 mb constant connection + 6mb for 10secs? I I really only get 12mb for 30 secs a day and the rest is 6 mb.

Don't think that you will get better service with Qwest. I have never had trouble with my DSL service but since I went to online billing I have to call them every couple of months because my bill is totally screwed and only once to my benefit. My bill is 84$ for phone and high speed DSL. Just love it when I get a bill for 140$.

the only thing i have to say about comcast is:

for some reason they didn't charge me one month and my service was cut off (online billing), and i called to see what was going on. they said it was some computer error, and that they would bill me for the month and cable would go back on. so, next day, still no cable. i call back, still no charge. finally cable comes back on, but i check my statement, and they had charged my credit card for 8 Months all at once! what the fuck? and then they wouldn't give me my money back. they just offered me credits, and then said they would just not charge me for 8 months. but then they wouldn't give me a statement saying how much they were charging me each month. they STOPPED SENDING ME BILLS. they could have been taking extra every month for all i know. it was ridiculous. so i called the credit card company and had them remove the charges and i'll never, ever do business with them again. crazy.

I would wager that comcast must be up there in the top 10 number of BBB filings.

Edit: Comcast MN has 232 filings over the last 3 years and 92 over the last one year 🙁
