This "feature" just got rolled out in my area (NW suburbs of Chicago). It allows me to see the usage on my account for the month to make sure that I'm below the 250GB cap.

I'm wondering if this is the first step toward pay as you use internet? It seems that having the ability to monitor how much bandwidth I use is a necessary first step towards capping it at a smaller amount. I can hear the CSR now: "But sir, you had the ability to check your data usage before you watched another episode of 'Heroes' on Netflix. The $300 per GB overage fee will apply!"

I've already blown through the cap once. I hit 350gb or thereabouts. Keep in mind that uploads are counted against you as well.
 
Netmeter puts my projected use at 63gb. However, that doesn't count what my roommate uses, nor does it count anything downloaded via 360..
 
250gb is plenty. for those who claim that streaming hulu will kill you, hulu doesn't even use that much bandwidth. it's probably less than those 1gb 720p TV show rips too... and you'd have to download 250 of those to go over your limit. 250 hours of TV shows in a month. And clearly Hulu can go even longer. So all those march madness games you're streaming via ESPN? I doubt that'll really kill your limit. Even if you download 24, Lost, Fringe, and 3 other shows every week, I think you'll be more than fine.

Of course there are those who will continue to insist 250gb is such a small cap.
 
We got our in colorado a few weeks ago. here's my info:

just as an aside... i think December has a high usage because i streamed all of Season 4 & Season 5 of LOST in HD via Netflix (ontop of my normal Netflix Streaming usage)
 
Comcast hasn't added the meter yet in my area, but I just bought a new router that supports Tomato so I'll have my own bandwidth meter soon as I set that up. Suppose I could've waited for Comcast but now I'll be able to double-check their numbers.

How much data are you using?

Feel free to run it up to 250GB if you are well under and thank comcast for alerting you to your underuse/overpayment...

Yeah I think the only way you could risk going over is if you file-share 24/7. Depending on what you use and how many files you share back and forth, you could easily max out your bandwidth most of the day and thereby hit your data cap before the end of the month.
 
My internet choices when I move to my new apartment are Comcast or U-Verse. I'm not really looking forward to this 250GB cap, is U-Verse any good? Haven't heard much about it.

I've already learned that DirecTV is cheaper (and better) than Comcast digital cable, so I don't have high hopes for Comcast.
 
I always love these threads. If you are even approaching 250gb/month, you need to get off of your computer and go outside.

So you think that 250 GB is an arbitrary line at which they do not need to provide a bandwidth meter, but by providing the bandwidth meter they will be able to lower the cap?

No, they could have capped it at 100 GB with no bandwidth meter.
 
actually I think Comcast would have been better off if they didn't enforce a cap.

Now that I know exactly what the limit is and how much I'm using, I just want to hit the limit every month. It's human nature.
