My comcast speed has been lacking to me recently. I switched out the modem thinking it may be the issue. Didn't help. The plan is supposed to be 12MKbps but I am getting the following.

Speed Test #65302670 by dslreports.com
Run: 2009-01-21 19:24:06 EST
Download: 5115 (Kbps)
Upload: 1379 (Kbps)
In kilobytes per second: 624.3 down 168.3 up
Boost: 9629
Latency: 42 ms
Tested by server: 4 flash
User: anonymous
User's DNS: comcast.net
Compared to the average of 2808 tests from comcast.net:
* download is 34% worse, upload is 40% worse

I assume 5115Kbps = 5.115 Mbps, right? So, in theory I am not even getting 1/2 the speed. I know for a fact it used to be ~10,000 or bettter.

Just want to make sure before I call them and complain.

Yes, that' 5.1 Mbs.

Also know that your service is "up to" 12 Mbs. Calling them is the best course. There could be something wrong with your account or something with your home wiring or theirs.

From my (*poor) experience with Comcast, the speeds you will get will vary with the time of day and the load on the nodes, meaning how many people in the area are using it. They recently rolled Docsis 3.0 in some areas which in my case caused my SNR to go to crap. Check your levels in the modem. Technically +15 to -15 on the download side is ok, anything below 50 on the upload is ok. The TAC have a utility to check the upload SNR.

Things to look out for: avoid open connections on the splitters. Split your modems signal first with a 2 way (cable in 2 out, 1 to the modem 1 to the rest of the TV's) Disconnect unneeded drops and unneeded splitters.

If the node is overloaded there isn't much you can do.

When it worked my 12/2 service would boost up to 24/3ish and run 12/2 stable afterwards.
