Comcast Modem Rental v. Purchase my Own?

I'm currently renting a Ubee modem from Comcast for $7/mo. Does it make sense financially to go buy a new modem or is renting one a better option? Is there a particular make/model that you guys can recommend?

I rented one because the first thing they blame if you don't is your modem.

It was worth it to me to not have to defend myself every time I had a problem.

I just rent theirs. Average modem is $60 is, so you are at almost a year before you break even. Jus tnot having to call in the help desk to tell them the MAC of your new modem is worth it to me.

that, and for comcast, the last time I tried using my own router (after they installed the coax line), they charged me for the modem... had to physically go there, show them my physical cable box and mac sticker (to prove its mine, not their model)....

got mine for like $20 after rebate a long time ago... so yeah

You want to pay $7 to rent a modem?

You can buy a used modem DOCSIS 2.0 for $30 on eBay or less. A brand new DOCSIS 3.0 can be bought for $60-70 from Amazon. All depends on what speed plan you are on.

In my opinion, renting a modem is a terrible idea. Do you only plan on keeping internet for 1 year? No, you will keep it for a while. Even if you move, you will probably re-order cable internet. There aren't many broadband choices.

Definitely a waste of money to rent! I bought mine several years ago and have saved myself $7/month since.....After two years I have spent $50 total on my cable modem when I bought it versus the $168 dollars I would have spent renting their modem and still continuing to pay them for.

It vary.

In many case if there is a problem and the Interent connetion does not work ISPs will refuse provide free support to resolve the proble,.

As s a result resuming the service will cost you more than what ever you saved on the rental.

Find out what your specific ISP's TOS is.

In the 3-4 years I've lived here Comcast has replaced my modem no less than 7 times. To me the rent is worth it.

It's hit or miss. In the 10+ years I've had cable, I've had 3 total modems. The original Motorola Shark Fin that crapped out after 3 years of use (rental). A new rental that I had for 5 years (Surfboard) and another that I've used between 2 providers now for the better part of 3 years.
