Tee hee. I've had solid 400KB/sec downloads for almost three months now. Welcome to the party!

And I got my latest bill from them yesterday too. I recently ordered the Speed channel (along with some others), which normally costs $5.99 extra per month. The CSR told me (on her own) when I ordered that I would get the first 4 months of that service for free. Unfortunately my bill did not reflect that, they were charging me full price. So I called their customer service last night and found out the original CSR lied to me. :disgust::|

I'm seriously thinking right now that it's time to get the dish and DSL...
Are you sure it's their fault you're only getting 800k? What are your upload speeds?

You should take a wire brush to every connection you can find in the house.

When we first got cable here, the cable jack was back in a corner and kinda hard to see. I had horrible speeds and packet loss for the first 3 months. We had the cable guys out several times, and they couldn't figure it out. Then just on a whim, I brought a lantern over into the corner and noticed that the cable jack was all green and corroded. I brushed it, and boom.. everything was perfect. Made me mad.. :p If that doesen't help, it could be at the pole.. Or it could be that your area is just really packed, but in that case it would noticably go down during peak times and noticably be faster during off-peak times.

Anyway.... You wouldn't be any better off if you got DSL, unforunately. It's about the same price, and you only get 768k/128k(with verizon). It's even worse with Qwest.

We get 1.76/256k cable and free basic cabletv for a total of 58$/mo. It would be worth activly trying to solve any problems with yours.

I did that when @home died. Charter sent a letter stating that I would continue to get the same service at the same price as I did w/ @home with their pipeline service. This letter came just two day s AFTER the rate increase letter.

Then the day they make the switch I am down. I call Cust "no-service" and tell them I am down. They tell me the problem is I with my comp. I tell them the modem diagnostics are telling me it can't sinc with the network. They call me a liar. I get pissed, they send out not one, nopt two, but three techs - to show them where this "modem diagnostics" is. They after they replace my modem, they tell me I need to pay extra for each comp :|. I call for dsl and schedule install for the following week. I get letter from charter saying that in addition to my price increase, that was before the anoucement of no price increase I will now be charged 10 dollars a month for the modem rental. It was supposed to be included in my 45.99 then my 49.99. I switched to dsl and have not looked back. I actually called charter when this 40 dollar deal hit and I was considering giving them another chance (i Currently pay 59.99 for 1.5/256) but even tech support was unable to answer my questions. the big question I had, WILL I BE ABLE TO USE AN OUTGOING MAIL SERVER THAT IS NOT ON THE CHARTER NETWORK. He was unsure but did tell me that if I wanted I could get a bussiness account that qwould let me for the low low price of 90 bucks.

I have completely ditched the cable and my parents are in the process of doing that as well.(they have cox).

I wish we had Verizon DSL and the other cheapie $30/mo options.

We have Earthlink DSL 1.5/128 for $50 which is relatively affordble BUT you gotta add the regular phone service which is another $30 = $80/mo just for freakin' broadband.

If we only had one computer I would cancel our phone line, DSL, and get T-Mobile Unlimited Internet for $19.99/mo with our current T-Mobile cell phones.

Eli, the cable in my house was completely re-wired, all the way back to the pole, when we moved in 13 months ago. I had a free install deal and the techs (who were independent contractors) just went to town.

I just did some new speed tests and it was back up to 1740/248 so I guess all is well.

I was just venting on Comcast earlier. Unfortunately, there are no good alternatives to them, but I am very, very sick of their business model. It basically involves upselling the customer's service by promising a promotional discount, and then not coming through with the discount on the bill. If the customer even notices the "mistake" and makes the effort to call in, they are then told by an overly rude CSR that they have no record of the discount and "did you fill out the 4 page application in order to see if you qualify to receive this promotion?" (actual CSR quote) which of course I was never told about or sent, I was simply told (like in this most recent case) that I would get the first 4 months of my new upgrade for free, or that if I got both internet and digital cable, I would get $10 off my bill for the next 12 months. They don't tell you that you'll have to fight over it because their very business model involves gross criminal misrepresentation.
To you and me, it's just $5.99/mo. Fighting might not be worth the hassle. But to them, it's $5.99/mo. * 1,000,000 subscribers...
