Comcast High Speed rate increase -- should I go DSL?

Dood

Senior member

Comcast High Speed Internet is raising the rates from $30 to $40 for modem owners (modem renters get a cut...$50 to $45...which is unfair, but anyway...). Plus another $10 for the basic TV service. I don't even use the $10/mo TV service (I have satellite). So I'm in for $50/month.

Bellsouth offers DSL for $45 or $50 per month (depends on your phone service package) with a rebate for a free external modem and a free month of service.

I could actually sell my two cable modems to defray some of the cost of DSL.

So the money is the same. I'm pissed at Comcast for (a) raising rates and (b) penalizing modem owners. Will BS DSL be as fast? How is the service level?

Thanks for any opinions.

Its fast but not nearly as fast on downloads as cable modems.

Depends what you do online. If you game a lot go with DSL (faster upload=faster online gameing). The draw back is that your downloads are usualy slower.

where do you live? my family got comcast 1 month ago and my dad will be livid if they increase the rate so soon.

I would stick with cable. All my experieneces with DSL have been bad, and all my experiences with cable have been good. Especially my most recent installs - DSL took approx 8 weeks from when I called, cable took 4 hours.

Now, once my DSL finally got working - it was approximately as reliable as the cable modem, but in general they left a bad taste in my mouth about the whole experience.

I've enjoyed my Verizon DSL experience since September, but I think I'd go with cable if it was available just because everyone here raves about it.

The rate increase is for Nashville.

I hate Comcast. But I don't want to go to alot of trouble and risk worse service for no money savings....

Actually that is fair because modem hardware costs are much less than they used to be.

I would switch only because I dont like rate increases, and increases that high that fast I wouldnt accept. Unless cable is that much faster in your area.

Yeah, but one year ago they "dangled the carrot" of much lower rates ($15/mo savings...$30 vs. $45) if you bought the $200 (at the time) modem. Basically, @Home shifted to cost of the equipment upgrade to the users.

When I first moved into my new house, I had the options of SWB DSL & Comcast Cable. I had both companies set me up so I could tell what I wanted to use.

(These stats are for Olathe, KS.. So YMMV)
Comcast: Slightly faster downloads, crappy upload speed. But the connection was always on
SWB DSL: Slightly slower downloads (but not by much) and 128k upload speed. But I had to login, so when my computer rebooted, it would not be online until I logged in.

I hate comcast, I mean I really hate it. But it was the better of the 2 for me anyway. I went with comcast, and now I have no access to newsgroups, and both my download & upload speeds have dropped.

Someone told me that BS DSL will provide "filters" for your non-DSL devices (phones, alarm, fax, DirecTV, etc). Do you have to use these?

My plan is to run one dedicated line to my office for DSL modem use. Then another line for all phones/other devices. Can I use ONE filter inline for the non-DSL stuff??

I left Comcast last month. I have SBC 756KBdown/128KBup DSL now and love it. It can be a little bit slower when compared to the 1/10th of the time that Comcast is giving what your paying for. However DSL has been very reliable.

I live in the suburbs of Atlanta and I have Bellsouth DSL, supposedly 1.5mbps/256kbps.... its costing 45$ a month and i get about 1250kbps/215kbps when tested with dsl reports, so its pretty good.. hardly ever down, always working.... bellsouth has pretty good support too if you have questions, although it can be a pain..

another option to consider is verizon dsl... my older brother is livin in Baltimore right now and hes gettin verizon for 50$ a month, supposedly 1.5mbps/256kbps but last time he ran a test on dsl reports he got some insaaaane speeds.. i think it was like 4.5mbps/1.5mbps or something like that... it was crazy, i could hardly believe it and told him to run the test again and surely enough, it was around the same thing.. I dont know if verizon dsl is available where you live or not, but you may wanna look into it...

either way, bellsouth dsl is real good..I've had it for about a year and a few months now, and its been down 3, maybe 4 times in all........ always fast and works great...

I ordered DSL from Earthlink about 5 weeks ago. The rep on the phone said "Sure, you're in our service area. We just need to check the phone lines." My phone lines got approved and I recieved the DIY kit in the mail. Two weeks after receiving the kit, I still don't have the service working. It turns out "checking the lines" means they call your local telephone company and ask if you're in range of their service. The phone company failed to tell Earthlink of two huge coils of extra phone line that was in between my house and the hub. So, even though geographically I was in range for the service, the extra wire made my house almost twice the acceptable distance for service. The whole experience has been a huge waste of time.

I'm sticking with Comcast.

Comcast *LOVES* to hear this!! It is very difficult to change broadband ISPs with the limited options. So they keep raising rates and lowering service and still make more money.

Breakeven: (1-lossrate)x(1+price increase) = 1

...or something like that. They can lose 25% of their existing customers (which they won't) and still have the same revenue.

from what i see, dsl is usually slower in both respects. the only advantage to dsl imo is the guaranteed throughput. it always (or should) stay the same, where as cable decreases as more people are in the network. i get 2mbit/384kbit transfer rates. my friend has dsl and its 15 more per month and he gets 768/128. heheheheh. 😀

our rates went from $33 -> $40 + $5 for the modem rental.. that hasn't changed. This was about 3 months ago tho. w/ the new network crap.. i hope they don't go any higher... cause dsl isn't a viable option for us.
