There was a full page Comcast ad in my local paper yesterday. They are offering the Performance tier of their HSI (6 Mbps) for $20/month for 12 month. There is nothing in the fine print about contracts. You do have to be a Video or Voice customer.

There is nothing there that disqualifies current HSI customers. *However*, there is that "Call for restrictions and complete details" catch-all. They turned me down on two different accounts with different excuses while refusing to provide me with a written list of all restrictions and details.

In any case, it is worth a try. The phone number given in the ad is 1-888-791-7090.

Offer ends 6/30/09, and is limited to current Video or Digital Voice residential customers. Not available in all areas. Offer limited to 6Mbps Performance High-Speed Internet. For those that do P2P downloads/uploads, keep in mind that Comcast does not like p2p users and will make your life miserable if you share/upload through p2p. Otherwise a good provider, if you don't wear the skull and bones.

i use utorrent and have zero issues.

you just can't have a crapload of connections (hundreds) going at once. that's when they do the whole 'impersonate you and break your internets' thing.

they're still an awful provider, though, and i would urge anyone with options to use them. i don't have many, but am going to try to get this rate since they've never really given me ANYTHING to entice me to not get DSL and satelite for cheaper.

What do they do to BitTorrent users? I thought they ended the throttling?

They still do throttling, but it's supposed to be protocol agnostic now.

Nothing has happened to me and I've used Comcast for almost 2 years. I still get really good speeds. I'm fairly sure they stick to the 250 GB cap and ended the throttling a while ago.

Yeah, they still throttle, but they don't outright shut down Bittorrent anymore. They still have the 250GB/mo cap though, which is unacceptable to me. That's why I'm on Verizon DSL (cheaper too!).

Please don't forget there is a 250gb bandwidth limit. Comcast is horrible. I urge to switch to something like fios if you can. This deal is good for those of us who only have access to comcast, like me. no fios in san francisco = ( Btw their support is outsourced to mexico, so expect things like clueless employees and cancellations of service by mistake. (happened to me)

i believe they advertise something like '12mbps with powerboost,' powerboost being an extremely temporary increase in speed that occurs the first few minutes after having your connection reset (often as it does happen...).

I purchased their 8Mb/s service a couple years ago. I typically see top speeds now of about 2.1-2.2 MB/s now! I don't know exactly when they upgraded it. My upload seems to cap out at a little more than 2 Mb/s, which is plenty fast. I think that wherever FiOS exists, they crank up the speed to complete.

BTW... I called last week and threated to switch to FiOS (which I wasn't going to do) and they gave me my internet for $24.99 for six months (down from ~$54).

Out of three times I have used them, twice was horrible with huge lag during peak hours (obvious signs of over-subscription) and they would do nothing about it. CS was the worst for I have seen with any ISP (clueless CSRs on the phone, takes forever to treat disconnections etc). When it worked, bandwidth did seem high as they advertised. Generally worse ping for gaming in my own experience, though this is of course strictly YMMV.

i agree. I've never had speed/connection issues with Comcast, or Adelphia or their predecessor Verto. Good speeds and service. 11 years and counting...

I have FIOS now, but I would not think think twice about moving back to COmcast for internet. It wa snever bad for me. Not when I lived in boston or Natick, or Lowell. It's too bad I had to sign that 1 year contract with verizon. I really do not need the high bandwidth.

Worked for me

I had the 8Mb/s plan for a few weeks, I did not notice any difference from the 6

It may be hearsay, but I heard they actually cap your speed at 6 Mbps if that's what you order. If you go for 8 Mbps, they remove the cap and you get a crazy speed like what Gustavus showed (far above the 8Mbps).

I got the 16/2 package which use to be 8/2 package but my area got better speeds somehow? Well I usually get around 19/3 speeds.

I am actually thinking about downgrading to cut cost. I dont really need those type of speeds. I was actually quite happy with my 1.5/768 from AT&T before I switched.



Anyone ever have comcast give you your rented modem for free if you threatened to switch by chance?

Update: We recently got ATT fiber optic for cable/internet and I was gonna switch. I called Comcast and told them what I wanted and how much I was willing to pay... and got the deal.. plus two extra digital cable boxes.

So the deal I got was TV with EVERY pay channel option.. a DVR.. 2 extra cable boxes, HD channels and 12 MB internet and phone service (plus line backer) for $193 a month. Still expensive I know but about $30 cheaper a month than ATT fiber optic.
I would have never gotten this deal if it where not for the new competition.

My buddy in Chicago had WOW and ended up switching to Comcast because often he'd have corrupted RAR's from torrents. No problems with Comcast. So I think OTHERS might be messing with torrents, but Comcast doesn't appear to be one of them.

They are pretty good about giving discounts actaully.

I do not actually pay for video or voice, but I called their bulk rate department due to a billing error which they reversed (I live in an apartment complex with free bulk rate basic cable) and for my trouble, they gave me 6 months of cable modem for $25 instead of $43.

They seem to be afraid you will move to dsl as well. I have heard if you want premium channels you can get them for maybe $1 a month for a year if you sound like you are even considering direct TV , or att uverse.

I've never actaully had a problem with comcast they've always been pretty good. I notice the bulk rate department is much much nicer and more knowledgeable (i had comcast regular in southern california efore time warner ruined them ... as well, northern california comcast now is not bad either)

THe bandwidth cap I think is more of an empty threat just so they can try to throttle obscene torrenters. I've never ever noticed any sort of slowdown from torrents and I probably download 150gb a month. I don't think they are quite as draconian or ill intentioned as timewarner.
