Comcast, does it work to call and threaten to cancel service to continue the promotional rate?

Time Warner is no problem. Call, ask get a new deal. Don't know about Comcast though. Just try and ask. Say you've been looking around and you feel your monthly fee is too high compared to others and you're wondering if there's any deals you can take advantage of. Don't be an ass because your measly monthly fee means nothing to them when they have hundreds of thousands of customers.

I called TW up, telling them that I was strongly considering going to Dish/DSL because of their prices.

The rep told me flatly, "I can have your service cancelled immediately, if you want."

I think it helps not to be obvious. I had people calling me up saying stuff like 'I might have to go to one of your competitors.. I mean this price just isn't doing it for me..'

I don't care if you go to a competitor. It is obvious you are only looking to get a price reduction and are not what retention is really after--a customer who genuinely wants to switch services but who can be "saved" with a promotional rate.

So you tell the CSR that "I want to disconnect." You get sent to retention. Retention asks you why you are disconnecting. Try to avoid talking about price. "I saw an ad for Dish/DSL that said they had this feature and that." They might first try downplaying those features or promoting their own. Pretend you're interested and maybe bring up price subtly.. "I dunno their features look nice and it isn't like it'll cost me anything extra to give them a try.."

And yes I assume DirecTV works the same. Any direct competition.

I just did that today and got $15 off and lowered my internet speed from 6 to 4. Savings of $33 per month :)

Edit: and that was with comcast

Comcast doesn't care about customers. They were quoted in my local newspaper about not carrying local sports channels in our area: "Call DirecTv if you aren't happy."

YMMV. My friends have done it successfully. My roommate's tried it for us (the bill is under his name) and the guy didn't even stop us from leaving.

With Time Warner I had no problem just asking for the promotional discount for two years.

When I moved, I had Time Warner for about 3 months and it switched to Comcast. Not sure how it will work with them yet.
