I have found that people making 1984 analogies inevitably make 2 mistakes.
1. They confuse some megacorp with Big Brother. Wrong, BB represented the government of Oceania. Telescreens weren't consumer products in Oceania.
2. They assume that all Orwellian rights abuses are privacy violations. Wrong. 85% of the population of Oceania (the proles) was free to do, think, and say whatever they wanted, and their rights were abused by a complete lack of opportunity. Only Ingsoc party members had their privacy violated.
