Now if only Verizon would wire up FIOS to apt buildings... Don't see how they'll compete with that, especially since FIOS is available in my town.

I could get this I suppose, but 1.5/384 Verizon DSL is fine for a few months until I get back to college, where 6Mbs would make me cry. Verizon did just launch FIOS, and the entry level service plan is 5/2Mbs for $40. What is the upload on Comcast's cable? I don't really find that I need that speed when I'm not using bittorrent, where you can only get fast downloads with a high upload speed.

you people sound like we get speed for free...this is not the case.

We always had the option to pay more and eg. get 6000/784....so from my understanding its that they add an 8000/784 as an option and DOWNGRADE the 6000/784 to 6000/384, This is bad - if you want your 784 uplad now you have to pay even MORE. In other words:

comcast PR marketing slang says "UPDATE" - reality says "THE PRICE WENT UP !" <-- thats "great" !

um. no.

we are getting 6 Mb/s for the price that we originally only got 4. that's 2 mb/s free.

of course, back in the good old @Home days, the lines were completely unregulated and we all got the full 10 Mb/s up and down. we also had unlimited email space! but by the time they were offering service out of silicon valley, they were already limiting uploads, and later downloads, too. not that there was much you would want to download back then.

I have paid for 6M/768K for some time, & will now have 8M/768 for the same price.

As long as you have basic cable, that should be correct.

Why anyone would have HSI without basic cable is beyond me, since it's cheaper to have both than it is to have HSI without basic cable. Even if you don't ever watch TV simple numbers say have basic cable too.

I pay roughly $70 a month for basic cable, 6M/768, a HD receiver rental, & (I think) modem rental.

yeah, i think viper GTS is right. if you didn't have basic cable, then i think you do have to pay more... but if you don't want basic cable, you'd probably be better off with DSL anyway.

I never had 784 up- it's been 384 as long as I can remember, and I've had it since 1996. So they're just upping the download speed while keeping the upload speed the same.

But I know as soon as Verizon works FIOS into multi-family dwellings Comcast will have to start offering 10mpbs+/2mbps for the same price or lower.
