Comcast and WinXP Pro

Having some trouble getting Comcast to work with my new WinXP Pro box. I have got the Win 98 box and Audrey (internet appliance) to work with no problems. Basically I just set everything to default internet settings and did detect network. Anyone know of any special options that I need to check or do to get Comcast to work? It's definitely not the network, cord or the obvious. Definitely something in settings with WinXP. TIA!

do you have everything plugged in at once? if so, do you have 3 ip's from comcast?

if it's the only thing plugged in, have you tried resetting the cable modem?

how is your network setup? do you have a router?

No router or anything, I just switch the cord from the modem from computer to computer, I am shopping for a deal on a 6 port+ router. Our house is wired with cat 5! Anyone know of something that I am missing. Connections are fine, must be settings!

UPDATE

I brought the nre comp back to school with me and plugged it into my router/attbi set-up here at school and first try internet is running. Comcast must have some setting that I am still missing. Luckily I won't have to deal with that for a while until I bring my computer home for breaks. FYI.

Comcast requires that you have a username. Just go to System and change your computer name to whatever thay told you to name it..this "prevents" people from sharing the connection without permission. Even so, my little router emmulate Comp names and MAC addresses even, so my network is fine, that is , when I am at home😉

that USED to be true when comcast was teamed up with @home, but i don't know if that is still true. my cable modem switched over from comcast@home to comcast.net a month ago. We used to go off computer name, but now they work off NIC MAC address (they don't care about computer name anymore)

in order for me to use a different computer w/out a router, you have to reset the cable modem each time, which allows the new NIC to grab DHCP info (since MAC address is somewhat tied up with the cable modem's memory)

so, in other words, FordLorider STILL hasn't mentioned whether or not he ever tried resetting the cable modem each time!!!

Did you try with the computer name or host name (CNXXXXXXX)???
Comcast give you a computer name. You must put it under system/(somewhere) after installation.
If you live in Delawere, then it shouldn't be any problems. The old @home network and the new Comcast network are the same.

sohcrates is correct. On the new comcast.net you can't simply swap wires / pc names because they tie the IP to your MAC address... NOT the pc name as Comcast@Home did. If you paid for additional IP's it could assign IP's to more unique MAC addresses. I think I changed my PC name 2 or three times prior to getting my router with no loss of connection.

That is the way it used to be with @Home. It no longer matters one bit what you name your PC or use as a workgroup name. The network's are not the same.

When you do get the router, a simple way to get online would be to have the router clone the MAC address of the PC currently working (the one with the memorized MAC address). You can enter the MAC into the setup window. Edit: I am using WinXP Pro without problems.
