I have a few 1960-1970 Popular mechanics, from back when the Rotary was hailed as 'the next big thing.'

It was also the era when Detroit was shoving Jet engines into their cars . . . hehehe.

Heh ... I thought Allis Chalmers was out of business also ... my dad has an old AC. Has the original manual for it also where it lists rubber tires as an option.

Ok, It is now old news that this is old news!
Enough with the old news cracks!

The old Wankle Engine had a materials issues. The points of the rotor must maintain a good seal while in continous high speed contact with the chamber walls. In a conventional piston engine the rings come to a complete stop twice in each cycle so their average velocity is significatly less then the max velocity. In the rotary engine the seals run at nearly a constant velocity (dependind on engine speed) this is a very tough environment.

Hopefully we have come up with some better materials for this seal in the last couple of decades.

when i was a kid, they didn't have rotarys, they had to use rocks. and they didn't have gas either, they had to use rocks. those were the good old days, me and best friend, thag, out hunting mammoths and raping women from neighboring tribes.
