i have a msi K8N neo the nforce 250gb, i chose it over the via k8t800, as it gives me better oppertunity to overclock if i wish to, tho its not my main concern at all, it has on chip firewall which is good, good onboard sound and i really like the single chip idea

but i think im gonna get an x800pro, where i am i can find them considerably cheaper than the 6800gt (as in around £50 cheaper) and theyre more reaily available.

Nvidia chipset and Ati graphics? should work in harmony right or do i need to buy nvidia?

My MSI KN72-Delta L with NForce2 works just fine with my 9800pro so it shouldn't be a problem unless it's a specific board/card combination that's incompatible.

I suppose the question is does an ATI card take a hit when used with the nForce chipset?
I have an Asus nForce2 board and a 9700. Seems fine to me (3DMark 2001SE 13900) but it does stutter a bit on TRAINZ

I really don't think so. I figure Nvidia wouldn't limit it's sales of chipsets to only those manufacturers or consumers using NVIDIA video. That would halve their sales or more. It may be optomized for NVIDIA but ATI runs just fine with my pc.
