combining memory modules. a weeee question :D

i remember back in the days of the 72 pin edo memory module, and/or before, ther were these little 'y' adaptors that allowed you to plug two memory modules into one slot (i think maybe they had to be the same density, i dunno). im just wondering if such an adaptor is technologically possible with todays DDR. cuz i have all these 256mb DDRs that are useless cuz i dont have enough slots. just a shot in the dark 🙂

as far as I know, there is no way to connect extra ram sticks...motherboards often have 4 slots so if you are using mnore than 4, perhaps you should think about upgrading to greater value sticks. you can get 512ddr for like $80 or so. pop 2 of those babies in and you are ready to go ;-)

despite whether there is a way available, i was wondering if it is still technically feasible

im talking about where you would plug 2 modules into 1 slot, and the computer would see it as 1 module

I'm not sure how to combine two PCBs into a single DIMM slot, but I know it is possible to PULL CHIPS from existing memory modules to use in building higher density memory.

For example two sticks of 256MB module composed of 8 chips of (32Mx8) each, can be combined into a single 512MB module composed of 16 chips of (32Mx8).

Memory manufacturers do this all the time, though you would need to find a memory module manufacturer who would offer such a service to yourself.

Typically we're talking about a cost of $5 per built module for the rework. Not sure how much it would cost to add hardware that would allow 2 DIMMS/SLOT (if such hardware even exists!)
