I just got a new POS compaq deskpro ENL/p733 at work and I installed an MP3 ripper. The cdrom is slated for 48x. Cool! I thought, until all my programs say that my cd-rom drives doesnt support digital audio extraction. I cant beleive that in this day and age that this cd doesnt support DAE. My old 4x NEC did and its years old. I suspect that its the audio card. Its a POS Compaq soundmax. Is this possible?

Have you 'checked' the digital option for your cd-rom. Control Panel, Multimedia, CD-rom.

Lots of drives won't do DAE properly. Even if your COMPAQ does, I'll guarantee you that it won't do it well at 48X.

I know. My cdrom @ home, while its a 32x, maxes out on DAE @ 12x which is still pretty good I think.

DAE has nothing to do with the sound card. It's just your drive, IDE controller and software.

Nope, its the sound card drivers and its codecs. My external SCSI cdrw drive is on this new system also and it used to do DAE on my old pc but now it doesnt. I took the 48x drive home and installed it on my PC and it works just fine. Compaq really bites. They are putting even cheaper components into there newer systems. My old compaq pc at work had a sound blaster 128 in it and all worked fine. this new soundmax card is probably all software driven, its built into the system. I may disable it and swap out the card. I bet it works then.
