Com ports??!! need help

Basiclly I am trying to hook up a series 5 psion with my pc (xp). Have done lots of troubleshooting and head scratching which has lead me to use the hyperterminal to check communications. Using the Hyperterminal I punch in all the information and continually get the 'Another program is using the selected telephony device, try again after the other program completes'. How do I identify the program which is using it? I know that the com port is working fine as I have used it before with IR adapters etc so I know it works fine. Please help my find the problem or atleast the program thats using it.
 
Try booting into safe mode and see if you get the same error. If not, you probably have some background app running in your startups that's using the COM port. Maybe a sync app for a PDA or a UPS monitoring app. Check your startups in MSCONFIG for likely culprits.

thanks, I disabled the port than rebooted, and enabled it again, whatever it was its nw let go of the port and eveything works fine, thanks for the suggestion though.
