Got laid off on 7/10. They cut the whole "professional services" team at our division here in Chicago.

My advice to college folks: focus on Java and Microsoft .NET. Java is burning hot right now, and .NET is going to pull the market out of its slump.

On a side note, can anyone recommend good job search sites for tech folks? I've already used hotjobs.com, headhunter.net, dice.com, monster.com, and computerjobs.com. They're quite low on good e-commerce positions using my skillset (ASP/VBscript, SQL Server, etc). Sucks :(

Any other .com layoff victims here? Share your sob stories.

My advise for anyone, after seeing what i have seen in the past year, have a look at Linux, MySQL (it is avail for win too), Java programming is taking a huge step back since the whole valto database connection scam was discovered... I would suggest perl programming if you are aiming for the web, but c programmers are always needed...

Get new skills? too late now! Even if I start learning Java now, I'd only be entry level. Besides, why is Java so hot anyway? I always thought it was pretty lame...

To answer the question, what's so big about Microsoft .NET: it will change the way we program. With Web Services, people can create what is essentially Internet-accessible API sets, which you can sell to other developers. I've been to a seminar and am currently experimenting on my own with .NET. I'm really impressed with it.

Your problem is you're trying to chase what's "hot". Probably how you got caught up in the .COM crap in the first place. Why set yourself up for the same thing again? Why not invest in things that will always be relevent (e.g., engineering)?

And .NET will not change the way we program much beyond the syntax differences of C#. Stop buying into the hype you read on ZDnet please. Seminars can be equally evil. There are ZERO new technical ideas coming from .NET. Sure, they're integrating a lot of old ideas into a nice package, but it's certainly not going to change the way we program fundamentally.

Fundametally, assembler is the same as c or c++...

.net is not going up, it is going the same route that MSN one went, into the shadows of the big community...

That is just what i believe... If you want to learn programming, go for perl and c, if you want to learn about systems, check out the unix world...

That is the future for PCRES, and i think it is the future for this computer world...

Mind explaining more about this?

Thanks.

That's all relative, and I'm being practical. C is a huge step up from assembler. C# offers little new over what Java has for the past several years.

Learn PHP, that is probably going to be the next big thing, you can do ANYTHING with it.

That's what I do. VB6/COM+/ASP/SQL Server. Bread-and-butter. There are a lot of developers with this skillset so the market isn't quite bursting with openings. However, any talented developer with several years of experience will "easily" find a position. Talent is always hard to find.

Umm, PHP already has a huge following. Where have you been?

If you have SQL down, and you know programming and skripting, is there something about making 6 digits as an MCDBA that has eluded you? Where you making 6 digits when you got laid off?

That tells me one thing, you have no understanding of the basic concept of SQL based local networking, or that java in itself was never meant to be a very high bendwidth programming language, like c, the performance differance isn't even HUGE, it is out of this world...

You really cannot compare c to a language that is compiled while it is running, the only way to make c programs run at that low speed would be to write loops...

Java in integrated solutions is as stupid as using a car battery for your PDA...

Mebbeh it's best that we all go slow on the "e" business companies. Fall back to "classic" companies which does client/server or desktop applications. I suppose that's something else to do.

What are you talking about? I said C# offers little new over Java.

I never made such comparisons. Again, I don't know what you're talking about. I specifically compared C# to Java because of its VM-based (whether it be interpreted or using a JIT compiler) nature.

MCDBA is just extra understanding about non SQL databases like the MS SQL server... the S in SQL stands for Standard, as usual, MS does not follow the standard of the computer world...

I think that MS is biting themselves in places, they have to take over the entire standard making lobby or just disappear, MS is nothing but a company living on it's customers, but sooner or later their customers will see the better alternatives, and MS will go down...

Those of you who think differently are just in denial...

Ugh! No more thick clients. No more "so-and-so's desktop is having DLL registration problems again." You want to use my apps? Open your browser and point to it.

I´v been learning php on my own, slowly. But I belive PHP will demolish ASP totaly.. someday and will push JSP aside.
