Hi.

I'm currently trying to print a two-colour illustration, which is a black image on a maroon back ground. The black prints fine, but the maroon prints as a blotchy mix of yellow/orange and red/maroon.

Whats going on here? I've only had the printer a few weeks, so i doubt it's broken. It prints photos without any dramas. Im using the genuine canon inks that came with the printer, and ordinary white 80gsm paper. And black and white text prints come out fine.

On the image, i used adobe photoshop6 to increase the contrast, so thare are only black and maroon in the image. If it helps, the maroon is (127,20,22) which is a print-safe and web-safe colour according to photoshop.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Are there any image enhancers active in the printer's drivers that might interfere (literally) with whatever rastering/dithering Photoshop has done? Canon's drivers have stuff like "web image enhancing" and a couple of similar things. Disable those.

I have found that colors in the maroon - purple range can print funny on my iP3000 too (particularly if shot with a flash). What brand of paper are you using? I have found that most non-Canon papers may take significantly different settings than what might be intuitive. The Kodak web site has suggested settings for their papers for many different Canon printers (I use the i560 settings - unfortunately there was no direct predecessor for the iP5000 but the i860 or the iP4000 may get you close). But if you use 3rd party ink tanks, then those settings might be out the window. That may give you a better starting point for whatever paper you are printing on.
. Also make sure you are using the latest drivers from Canon. I noticed a significant improvement after I uninstalled the original drivers for my iP3000 and installed the update - plus there are some features that were missing in the originals. One allows the old manual head alignment routine and another allows for even thicker media.

I have a Canon I850 so YMMV.

When you print, enter setup printer and select manual color instead of auto. This will give an option for one of the following; auto, graphic, photo, text. Select graphic and the driver will print a consistant color.
