Coloured contact lenses. Info?

Anybody have information on coloured contact lenses? Are there any reliable, reputable online sources for purchases? I don't know too much about contact lenses altogether. What I'm looking for is purely aesthetic. My eyes are perfectly fine (better than 20/20). I just want to have fun messing around with some contacts, see how I look with different colours/designs (although not too keen on the designs). A couple that interest me are the completely white ones. That'd freak some people out good - and maybe some freaky colours like red, yellow, etc.. That'd definitely give some people the creeps. hehe...

So, if anybody knows of any reliable informative sources and/or online places to purchase, I'd be very thankful for the info. Thanks. :)

On my last optometrist checkup, I was told I have better than 20/20 (in one eye). Anyway, buzz off, this thread isn't about my eyes - it was merely noted that my vision is fine and I'm not looking for correctional contact lenses, just getting contacts for aesthetic reasons. Jeez. Didn't think I'd have to clarify on that, but ok. Anybody else have some info? Hey thanks for that link btw, aphexII.

20/20 is average vision. It means that you see at 20 feet the same details that the average person sees at 20 feet.

You can have better than 20/20 vision. I had 20/15 vision when I was around 7years old

EDIT: Just go to walmart and have your eyes checked for contact lenses. They will tell you the size you need. Then you can get whatever you want for lenses.

Question

What does it mean when someone has 20/20 vision?

Answer

The expression "20/20" is so common in the United States that there's even a TV show named after it. Here's where the 20/20 designation comes from:

By looking at lots of people, eye doctors have decided what a "normal" human being should be able to see when standing 20 feet away from an eye chart. If you have 20/20 vision, it means that when you stand 20 feet away from the chart you can see what the "normal" human being can see. (In metric, the standard is 6 meters and it's called 6/6 vision). In other words, if you have 20/20 vision your vision is "normal" -- a majority of people in the population can see what you see at 20 feet. (From here on, please assume that the word normal has quotes around it.)

If you have 20/40 vision, it means that when you stand 20 feet away from the chart you can see what a normal human can see when standing 40 feet from the chart. That is, if there is a normal person standing 40 feet away from the chart and you are standing only 20 feet away from it, you and the normal person can see the same detail. 20/100 means that when you stand 20 feet from the chart you can see what a normal person standing 100 feet away can see. 20/200 is the cutoff for legal blindness in the United States.

You can also have vision that is better than the norm. A person with 20/10 vision can see at 20 feet what a normal person can see when standing 10 feet away from the chart.

Hawks, owls and other birds of prey have much more acute vision than humans. A hawk has a much smaller eye than a human being but has lots of sensors (cones) packed into that space. This gives a hawk vision that is eight times more acute than a human's. A hawk might have 20/2 vision!

Thanks for the info BUT, moving away from 20/20 vision argument, please. Save it for another thread.

So, what would your suggestions be? I'm a typical tall/lean young male with the standard brown hair/hazel eyes. However, my hair is a fairly dark brown, if that makes a difference. Is there a possibility I won't be able to get contacts at all? I heard some people can't use them due to the shape of their eye or something. I have no idea about this.

Contacts are expensive, this won't be a cheap experiment or fun. Their web page says as cheap as $99 per pair, mine are $400 a pair. Luckily insurance covers 90% of mine (since they're not an optional treatment).

Also, keep in mind that soft contacts present a risk of oxygen deprivation to the cornea (the cornea has no blood supply of it's own), plus infection from poorly cleaned lenses.

RGP lenses, while much less prone to damage the eye, are not particularly comfortable & can be extremely painful (if they slide off of the cornea).

I have to wear contacts to be able to see, glasses don't help my eyes.

I wouldn't wear contacts for the fun of it though.

info on astigmatism

when you talk about contacts not being able to fit an eye, they have an astigmatism. i personally am a -2.75 in each eye (me so blind) and have an astigmatism of 50. that just meant i needed to get a different brand of contacts that had a slightly larger lens so that it would fit my eye. they had given me acuvue 2 to try, but it didn't fit my right eye at all, so now i use biomedics.

the best thing to do is to go to a place like walmart, get your eyes checked cheap, and then order the lenses you want to make sure there is nothing wrong with your eyes.

EDIT: some info on colored lenses and also contacts in general here

Final bump. I'll check again later to see if any additional info is put up. :)

Thanks for all the input, despite the arguing. :)

I have to wear rigid gas-permeable lenses, or RGP's. The advantage of mine, of course, is that once a pair is found that works correctly they'll work indefinitely as long as I don't break/lose them & my corneas don't deform any further. As I said before though, insurance covers virtually the entire cost of the lenses, & the pair I'm in now should last me quite a while. In the end mine may actually be cheaper than soft lenses.
