Color problem with LCD

My new Viewsonic LCD, VP201s, has an odd problem. When I turn the contrast up, I get pinkish grays where there should be light gray. If I increase the contrast, it gets worse in a certain range. I took one back that did the exact same thing. And I've tried this one on two different monitors. Are they all likely this way, or did I luck out and get to with the same problem...or is this just a standard characteristic of this monitor?

Ideas?

LCDs do not produce shadows and blacks like a traditional CRT monitor does. So yes, if everything else about the monitor is fine, but the shadows/blacks are not "true", then it is chracteristic of LCDs, you can also notice this on the latest plasma TVs. Technology is getting better, and soon the shadows will be just as good as a CRT.

Yes, but are pink grays normal? I mean, as I turn the contrast up beyond 3/4, the grays look mauve (pink). The background of this box, for example, is more pink than gray.

I had that same problem with a Viewsonic VP171b. Everything had a pinkish hue. Problem totally went away after I switched to DVI. Using analog, I was able to reduce it by dropping the red about 10%, green by 5% and maxing blue.

...and no it's not inherent to LCDs. That was a flagrant comment.
