Color "bleeding" across width of monitor

I turned on my PC the other day to find my display in bad shape:
The problem is especially apparent on programs with white backgrounds - wherever there is text or any object, the color of the text or objects bleeds across the entire width of the screen (with the exact height as the text or object it is bleeding from).
This is also apparent when you have a window open (not maximized) against the wallpaper... as you move the open window around, the "bleeding" will follow the window around - all the way across the screen w/ the height of the open window.
The HP splash screen also shows this (prior to Windows XP loading)...

I have tried re-installing all the video drivers and also tried using a different monitor, but the problem is still there. The other strange thing I just found out is that the PC downstairs is having the exact same problem - both with nVidia Vanta graphics cards.

Anyone ever hear of this before?

I had the same problem with my Geforce 1 SDR Try starting your comp in safe mode, do you still get the problem ? If so reboot the comp and enter the bios setup. Is there banding visible on the bios setup screen ? If there is you have the same problem I had. Unfortunately that problems is probably caused by a hardware failiure on the graphics card (Banding on the bios screen should rule out all driver issues). I solved my problem by RMA:ing my card. Unfortunately the refurbed card I got back had the same problem so I had to RMA that one as well. Luckily the card I got back the secondtime worked.
 
Yes... the problem also occurs in safe mode - and the "HP Invent" splash screen is the bios screen... which also has banding.

Sorry... what is RMA:ing? Why would this occur to both cards at about the same time? Did they give you any explaination?
 
RMA:ing (RMA = return merchandise authorisation, I think) is another way of saying. "Returned the card as it still was under warranty".

I have no idea why the card I got back first time also was broken. I got no explanation from creative. But I did get an appology and they sent me another card straight away.
 
Thanks TRex65... Unfortunately, I think my warranty is up.

I'm just seems strange that both video cards failed at the same time... so I hope there isn't some external factor that is causing the problem. So when I get my new card, it doesn't fail on me too.
 
If you have another monitor around, try hooking it up to verify that the problem is with your video card.

At work one of the computers had that problem about 1 month ago. It was a bad TNT2 video card. Sent it back for a replacement and now the bleeding is gone.

I went to visit my parents this weekend. I looked at my Dad's screen and there was the same color bleeding problem. It appears with different monitors, different monitor cables, and even in the bios screen. He has a TNT2 Vanta...

I think NVidia has sold a bad product.
 
Yeah... I've tried as many possible configuration setups as I could think of - all producing the same results.
Both cards are Vantas as my house too... I was wanting to upgrade, so I guess here is my excuse.

I just picked up the Radeon 8500 64MB over lunch... I'll cross my fingers and try it tonight.

Interesting. I've been having the same problem and I even switched the monitor to a secondary PCI video card in the same system, but the problem still remains. The thing is they are both the same video chipset (ATI 128Pro on an older Mac G4). Maybe I'll have to try the monitor on an entirely different computer with a different video card.
