Oh, you know, the usual stuff. No smoking, eat a balanced diet, plenty of good exercise, AND DRINK LOTS OF WATER.
I do try to drink lots of water at least.
Another thing you might do if you are really radical about prevention is to drink "green tea" or Essiac tea. I think there is something to the claims for both. Essiac is a bit of pain to make though.
Probably the best thing most people could do (since most people are pretty set in their eating, exercise, and bad habits) is to have a colonoscopy done - starting when you feel like it or at about age 40 and then have them done at fairly regular intervals. Two year intervals wouldn't be too often if you are over 40. Also, don't be afraid to take a hard look at your stool. Look for blackening, blood, or any sudden unexplained change.
I had small amounts of blood, severe gastritus (sp?), and totally irregular trips to the john. One week before the discovery of that rather large, malignant bastich a gastroenterologist told me, "You DO NOT have colon cancer." They thought I had Crone's disease instead but at least that did cause the discovery.
