One prominent study a few years ago actually showed that a diet high in fiber had no effect whatsoever on the formation of colon polyps and they were just as likely to occur with any diet one might have. A diet that is high in fiber is good for you anyway though, so it can't hurt to try it out.

Not sure, but man, get that stuff checked out regularly. Cancer has killed everyone in my family.

Some possible answers:

Shine flashing red and blue lights and yell "Freeze Polyp!"
Colostomy bag...
Phone call to local plumbing service.

For the guy whose entire family has been killed by cancer: Dude, your family's got some seriously bad genes! (Either that, or you need to move away from the toxic waste dump..)

No not everyone in my family has died. Sorry if I mislead. But all four grandparents have died from cancer.

well that seems rather normal. people live longer, more likely to die of something like cancer instead of desease. perhaps in earlier times when people died early from hard lives any slow forming cancer they had never got a chance to kill em:p

Chill. When the ol' dirt nap comes a callin', go with the flow into the great beyond and don't look back. It's very peaceful on the other side, and you'll have no need for a clean colon.

You can get scoped regularly.

Now I used to work at a GI lab at a hospital, so I've seen more people get scoped than I care to recall. It's not so fun. I'll run you through the usual procedure.

The stuff you see on TV is Katie Couric (sp) chugging her go-litely or nu-litely, and she explains how she craps profusely for a couple hours. It's not so fun. You get to the hospital, you get into your robe, you get wheeled to the waiting room, more or less. You wait for the doctor. Most doctors are always late. I tell your family that the doctor is never late, and that he must have been held up by something important. I lie. He's probably eating breakfast. So they get you in there, and the black garden hose is lubed up and, well, you know what happens from there. Only it's gross :) I'd delve into what happens during, but you're asleep.

Only stuff that happens afterwards is your colon probably hasn't been properly deflated, so you fart like you can't imagine. You're a little woozy, since the doctors like for you to be nuked on versed and demerol or sublimaze (sp). It's a good time. You go home, and that's about that.

I read in the paper the other day that taking one childrens asprin a day has shown to lower the chances of producing colon polyps by a significant percent.

Although I think the ads are a bit of overkill, you guys should take this stuff seriously, VERY SERIOUSLY! Sure you are young and invincible now (or so you think) but things happen. I've had stage 3 Colon Cancer, two surgeries (surgeries came very close to killing me), extended chemotherapy using a 30+ year old chemical combo that makes you very uncertain if it's at all worth it, and now have to put up with regular colonoscopies. Aaaargh!! Almost every colonoscopy has found new polyps and two of them have been "pre-cancerous".

Drinking that danged Go-Litely is torture in itself. Having a 5 foot multi-function tubular tool jammed up your rectum and being wiggled about while the whole scene is videotaped isn't much fun either - mine only goes 3.5 feet now. BUT - pun? - that whole process is a great deal more fun than actually having the big C and going through the surgeries/treatments.

PS: if you have a colonoscopy, ask if you can drink Fleet instead of the Go-Litely. Must less of an ordeal.
And here is a a pic of what is left of my nice stomach ;) and the culprit. DO NOT LOOK IF YOU ARE A WUSS OR HAVE A WEAK STOMACH. Nothing pretty here - the C was about 3" at largest measurment. My apologies in advance to any of you that are grossed out by this. How do you think I feel?

So I'm sure your doctors have told you things to do to try and reduce colon polyps, right? So what can you tell us to do to help our own asses? Any advice would be appreciated, and if the only thing that we can do is just go in for colonoscopies, I'm not looking forward to that.
