Colombia at War. Does Uncle Sam go in?

It may be that I live in south Florida, which has a very large Colombian population. And, it may be that my wife is from Colombia. But, today's events have certainly struck a chord in my household and throughout the Latin communities in this area.
Years ago, the Colombian sentiment was strongly against US involvement in their problem. Now, though, the Colombian people, for the most part, are strongly in favor of US military might going in and wiping out the various thugs, terrorists, and guerillas who now control that country. Forty years is enough, I guess.
I don't see the US as having any pressing interest in these events that justify American blood and dollars to solve this problem. The argument about stemming the drug flow doesn't wash. That just is not going to happen.
Just felt like opining...............

The US has been in Columbia for decades now. We haven't helped/done anything b/c we don't want to. That's the bottom line. We can load thousands of troops, millions of tons of food/water/clothing/medical supplies and fly to an armpit of hell, like Somalia in an instant...but nothing in Columbia.

Why? Dunno...you'd have to ask the CIA about that one. Drug money is green, just like "regular money" is. Lot's off illegal stuff going on for a very long time. Everyone has their hands either stretched out, or in someone elses' pocket.

Sorry your wife's previous home country is in turmoil. They'll be fine...they've been in turmoil for how long, now? Decades, right?

There's little the U.S. would like more than a chance to wipe out Columbia's drug cartels. But hopefully we've learned enough of a lesson from Viet Nam that we don't go rushing off to fight a jungle guerilla war without having a clear national objective. With the war against terror on our plate, there's no way the American people are going to rise up and get behind any sort of intervention in Columbia no matter how much it might be in out best interests. They're on their own, at least for now.
