I might be going to Vandy in 2 years for my PhD. How receptive is the population down there to asians? I'm in the northeast and I'm perfectly fine with being ignored. I know that there are some schools in the south and midwest where I would have a harder time making friends then others.

as a gague lets say I piss someone off here in The NYC metro area. I figure they may call me a racial slur about 2/10 of the time, maybe less. What do you think the odds are at Vandy on and off campus.

thanks in advance

The majority of people in Nashville are not redneck racists. There's a large diversity in Nashville, it is the rarity of Tennessee. I'd say if you're being an ass, the chances are 6/10 to hear a racial slur. Normal behavior, I'd say 1-2/10.

thats pretty high.

If I'm walking back to the dorm from the library/bus stop late at night do I have a higher chance of being beat up for being asian vs someone being randomly beat up for no reason at all? serious question.

Ok, the 6/10 was a joke. It's much more likely to be beat up for being in the wrong place at the wrong time than it is based on race. Southerners really aren't all that racist, unless you hit the rural parts of the deep south. As I said, Nashville is a great city with a diverse population. I think we have one of the largest Afghani populations in America.

Ummmm...that's probably not going to happen. Vanderbilt isn't some open campus craphole.

To the original poster: Here's my best college choice advice for you: If you are not a big frat type of guy, then don't go to Vanderbilt. If you're somewhere in the middle, then it's a toss up. If you're shy/computer geek/loner/whatever, then I wouldn't recommend you to go.

For pure per capita hotties few schools can beat Ole Miss and I think most alumni/fans of SEC school who played/visited Ole Miss regularly can probably verify that. I don't know what's in the water over there, but everytime I visited there (or they visited us for a home football game) we were literally in awe. I think it has to do with the overwhelmingly popular greek life there.

I concur. Ole Miss has some of the finest women I've ever seen including movies, TV, and print.

Hrmm...CanOWorms I'm guessing that Vandy's engineering program is pretty good then? I was a little worried when I applied since I haven't heard anything really good about their engineering school.

Engineering courses during freshman year...I'm currently in the College of Arts and Science since I wanted to do Chemistry but I changed my mind. Is it going to be a problem changing my major and getting into the School of Engineering?

I don't think it would be difficult to transfer. It's not like other universities where it's difficult to change majors. Engineering actually has higher acceptance rates than A&S (arts and crafts is what people call it), but the average grades are really high (high school GPA, SAT, etc.). I would call them up and check up on it since there's a freshman orientation type thing (for engineers only I think) where you choose which engineering major you're going to be, meet with an advisor, and pick classes. The only bad think I can think about is that you might be losing out on some aid since you didn't apply to engineering directly. I knew a lot of people that had engineering grants (myself included), so I'm not sure how that would affect you. But I might be wrong, so don't take it too seriously.

Engineering (EE, CS, CompE, BME.. maybe CE) has a new building, which is very nice and serves as a social/study gathering place for engineers. It's very nice. I only had maybe 15-20 other EEs in my graduating class. I heard the other main engineering building (Materials Science, ChemE, MechE) was going to be recently rennovated. Rumor is that it's sinking into the ground :)
