Well I'm hardly racist (some of my best friends over the years have been white :)). I think I just connect better with other Asians because of culture, upbringing etc, whatever.

I'm probably going into engineering (EE, CE, or CS)

Bah, nonsense! You'll connect with anyone who has the same interests as you, regardless of culture and upbringing. (Plus, I was kidding :p) Vandy is nice, of course I've lived in this area pretty much my whole life, so I don't know much else.

Then both CMU and Vandy are fantastic (CMU especially if you have an interest in robotics).

As someone who has lived in the Boston area all his life, and is at least going a little ways away for college (I'll be going to Cornell), I felt it would be a good idea to get away from where I've always been, and get a new perspective on things.

Between the two, I think either will do you academically, so you should look at which school you prefer the living conditions of. I might give an advantage to Vanderbilt in weather (although I like the cold) and campus. Have you visited any of the schools overnight and/or talked to some students? How did you get along with them if so?

When I was choosing between colleges i was choosing between Carnegie Mellon for Comp Sci. and UCSD for Comp Sci. i visited both campus and i hated CMU, UCSD was awesome, it has a fantastic atmosphere and a very rigorous academic program in many fields. I highly reccomend UCSD, i think i made a very good decision.

My dad went to Vanderbilt and I gave it serious consideration. My uncle went to and my grandmother works at CMU. Have a friend who goes to CMU too. Haven't got the slightest clue about UCSD. Below is IMO obviously as I haven't attended either...

CMU: The school for people who are workaholics and really, really care about what they want to study. Top notch programs in all things technical, but you better know what department you want to be in as soon as you get there and be prepared to work your ass off. Like studying instead of going out all weekend. Also know that you'll have to deal with the 7/3 male to female ratio. Pitt isnt the most exciting city but its cleaner than most and the campus is average. Weather sucks. U of Pitt is nearby but their social scene isn't known for much other than drinking, so if that isn't your thing...

Vandy: More well rounded both in programs of study and student body (so many more hot girls ;)). Challenging but still a lot more laid back than CMU. Nice campus, decent town. I don't know exactly what you're worried about as far as fitting in. Of course, I went to a high school where there were about five Asian kids out of thousand so I suppose I don't get the whole associate with your race thing.

Seems like you're interested in more than academics from college. If thats true I'd definately go for Vanderbilt...

I can vouch for that. One of my really good friends goes there, and I think that MrDudeMan would agree (Talking about Ashley), she's incredibly hot.

I go to UCSD and am in the ECE department. No complaints thus far. So far I've had some pretty prestigious professors and from what I hear, UCSD has a pretty top notch engineering school. I do know that UCSD is one of if not thee best research schools...so that always draws some of the best professors.

The academics at Vanderbilt and CMU speak for themselves. But as far as the campus and surrounding area goes I think Nashville pretty much wins that one going away. Most people think Nashville and think country music, but it's actually a GREAT city to live in. Tons of entertainment options (much moreso than most cities that size) with a very affordable cost of living. If I had to live in any other large city in the Southeast, Nashville would probably top my list.

As for the hotness of the girls, you can pretty much say that for anywhere there's tons of 18-22 year old girls running around. ;) Out of the SEC schools it actually lags behind quite a bit IMO, but then again it's a more selective school. For pure per capita hotties few schools can beat Ole Miss and I think most alumni/fans of SEC school who played/visited Ole Miss regularly can probably verify that. I don't know what's in the water over there, but everytime I visited there (or they visited us for a home football game) we were literally in awe. I think it has to do with the overwhelmingly popular greek life there.

I might be going to Vandy in 2 years for my PhD. How receptive is the population down there to asians? I'm in the northeast and I'm perfectly fine with being ignored. I know that there are some schools in the south and midwest where I would have a harder time making friends then others.

as a gague lets say I piss someone off here in The NYC metro area. I figure they may call me a racial slur about 2/10 of the time, maybe less. What do you think the odds are at Vandy on and off campus.

thanks in advance

The majority of people in Nashville are not redneck racists. There's a large diversity in Nashville, it is the rarity of Tennessee. I'd say if you're being an ass, the chances are 6/10 to hear a racial slur. Normal behavior, I'd say 1-2/10.

I went to Vandy for EE. If you have any questions, let me know.

It's a very wealthy place. The campus is 50%+ Greek, meaning over 50% of the 6000 undergrads are in fraternities/sororities. Some people don't like that, some do. There aren't too many Asians (of any type) but they have their own clubs and their functions are very popular. 99.7% of the student population is exactly the same, all clones of one another.

You start engineering courses your freshman year (unlike other places where you do 2 years of general courses), so be sure you know what you want to do so you won't get behind.

I think their CompE program is pretty weak unless they changed something in the last year. I'd suggest you go into EE. BME & CS are by far the largest engineering majors. You'll have some courses where there might be 10-15 people in a conference room when you're a junior or senior.

You shouldn't worry, I've lived in Alabama, Tennessee (went to Vanderbilt), and Texas and I've never had a problem. I look like one of them A-rabs. People are very nice.

I've not visited any of the campuses but I plan to do so during mid Apirl when they have their open days so I can get a better idea of what it's like. My decision should be easier after I pay them a visit. I'm not crazy about academics...I'd like to go to a reputable school so I can get a good job when I graduate. Cost of attendance is a big factor since my family isn't that rich and I haven't heard from Vandy's financial aid office yet so I guess I'll need to consider that as well. After aid the cost of attending UCSD will be 11k (room and board included), Vandy is 42k but I don't know how much aid I'll get.

Vanderbilt gives a lot of aid, it's a very affluent school.

If they didn't give any money and it was Vandy 42k vs. UCSD 11k, I'd go to UCSD since it's a very good school at a decent price.

You'll be blown away by Vandy's campus. It's a nationally designated arboretum.

Well that's a pretty loaded question based on your own prejudice against southerners and midwesterners IMO. Why don't you just try not to piss people off so much? :p

I honestly understand what you're trying to say though. Truth be told, I'd personally think you'd probably be no more likely to hear something like that in Nashville than you would in New York. If anything, I think you'd be less likely given the slower, less intense pace of life in Nashville.

thats pretty high.

If I'm walking back to the dorm from the library/bus stop late at night do I have a higher chance of being beat up for being asian vs someone being randomly beat up for no reason at all? serious question.

No, but you'll have some random guy expose himself to you (seriously) if you're a girl :D It's like the most reported crime around there!
