He is obviously going to a good school if it is $40k a year.

He isn't going to some crap school no one has ever heard of or respected like you.

You can get a lot of puntang (whore) in a year for 40k. And, not to mention the wine & dine that is on top of things that come with head ache.

IMHO, school is over rated because I could buy a house or start a business, if the bachelor is 160k & master is around 320k base upon the above post ++ books.

As for me, I'm currently weighting the option of putting 45k ++ time for my master vs. putting it in to a house.

Reon - The other option that you have is drop out & move out to find your own way.

Dude, I don't know anyone that actually pays full tuition. Most schools have a financial assistance to something like 90-95% of the students (unless it's a public school, where tuition will be dirt cheap anyway). And you got scholarships on top of that. And Masters, with a good job, most employers will at least help with paying for that. It really depends on what you want to do, but going to school is most definitly not over rated. Plus a 19 year old can get $30k a year without too many problemsfor a student loan, but what bank is going to give you $160k all at once to start your own business in this day and age?

And for those who think that the 8-5 sucks compared to school, are obviously not engineering students. I'd love to only work on school stuff between 8am -5pm weekdays. Wednesday night I spent 12 straight hours on a Java project. Real world going to be more work? I doubt it.

College is typically pretty expensive, but there is rather large amount of scholarship/financial aid out there (although it is much harder for certain groups of people to get that). Colleges are also somewhat like businesses here, so as long as you keep paying and you're not failing all of your classes, they'll keep you enrolled.

thx for the answer

now let's say I have like 10 different classes in my first college years and I fail for 2 can you go to the next year???? Can you enroll in your 2nd year and just retake the courses of the 1st year
Maybe this is a dumb question but where I live, you have to pass all your courses (you must have 50%) from a certain year before you can go to the next year. When you don't have 50%, no 2nd year.

Most college students will graduate with debt. Hopefully I won't with my co-op's. How much is college elsewhere?

I hear you. I had the same time through college, although my problem was I just partied too much and blew off classes. My grades sucked, but I barely scraped by with minimal grades to pass.

Let me tell you though, college is not even the tip of the iceberg when compared to real life. After getting a job, the weirdest thing was I kept thinking in the back of my mind that I need to just through until summer, then all this will change because I was conditioned that way from being in school for so long.

Day in, day out, go to work, come back home, go to sleep, get back up, ad infinitum. The boss rarely changes, many co workers are a$$sholes. You'll be wishing for college in 5 years, trust me.

you can't just get a big ass loan. when you start a firm, thats different because you are expected to earn profit and pay back the loan. if i get a college loan, it's different because i would have to have a good job after graduation to pay back the loan. if i take out about 20k a year for the next 3 years. that will be 60k. with 5% interest and that figure is on the low end. well, you do the math. thats a lot of money i have to pay back, little by little for the rest of my life.

My point was/is, that it is easier for an 18 year old to get a 20-30k college loan than it is for an 18 year old to get a 160k business loan.

At my school, you have to pass at least 3 classes out of 4 (70% is passing), and maintain an 80% or better average. If that is not met, you are put on probation. 2 straight terms of probation and all scholarships are gone. 3 terms and you can't come back until you go to a different school and get (I think) a 3.0 there or better. If you come back and screw up a 4th time, you're done.

you won't believe it but where I live it's 500-700 euro for a year of college. That's without housing and your textbooks.
+housing is 120 euro to 300 euro a month
+textbooks (depends on what you do in college) - 500-600 euro ??

do the counting and you will see that at most the total cost for a year at a university is around 6000-8000 euro (classes + housing + textbooks).
a lot of students also qualify for financial support from the govt. (ecg I received 3000 euro a year).

I hope you guys make a lot of money when you graduate.

At least at my school, you can just tell the school not to send your parents your grades (same "league" as your school). However, if you're parents stop getting your grades, they might also stop writing checks... so pick your poison.

Which is about 80% of what i make this summer. they are also not rich, just your regular parents. It was a mistake to apply to Cornell early, i didnt even visit. and now i am stuck there. my grades arent that bad, a little below 3.0. They know where i stand and pushes me really hard. ithaca isnt really a good place either, afterall i lived in new york for 7 years before that. i couldnt adjust to anything. i know i said there were parties every week, but i didn't actually go to them. when i did go, it wasn't that great. the girls are all snobby and sh!t. so i didnt like any of them. i couldn't get myself to study or anything. i just slept a lot. didnt go to some classes because all i do is sleep anyway.

second year is about to start and i am getting ready to go up. my parents are about to find out my real grades. so i am fvcked. i know i will do a lot better second year around, but not before a 2-day talk with my parents. and i dont think i can survive that.

After your second year everything will become much easier. All your general elective classes should be taken care of and you'll have to focus in your major.

Cornell is out in the middle of nowhere. You should have went to NYU if you wanted a good time and stay in NY.

you can still transfer. I don't believe that NYU's Stern accepts transfers anymore. But maybe you can work something out with them. If you want to go outside of NY there are a lot of good schools.

yeah, it is my fault to go to cornell. i don't know, i was gonna apply early decision to columbia. but my dad asked me to consider cornell, and the next thing i know, the application is already sent.

the end of the first semester i got A-, A-, B, and C-. C- is in physics. since the school doesnt send out grades for the fall semester, i told them i got a B- instead of C- in physics. and the spring semester, my grades are A-, B, B-, C, B. they do send out grades, but I got it first. So i ended up sending a fake one to my parents changing the C to a B-. and consequently increasing my gpa from 2.93 to 3.01xx. Now I think i am in deep sh!t because they are gonna go ask the bursar for my grades when I return to school. I am doomed

I swear, jobs should pay college students more money. I work my ass off at school, then go to work at my job, and end up spending all my money on tuition/rent/the ripoff that is textbooks.

You'd think when I'm consistently pulling 10 hour days (school+work) I could afford to eat lunch at checkers.

Hahaha you have no idea how bad my GPA was... so bad that it was better off to start with a clean slate again. I know it's gonna be crappy for you for awhile but just stick with it and you'll be done before you know it. I should be finished by now but i messed up too. It's just a minor setback for you... you might be a bit delayed if you really need a 3.5+ but i'm sure it can't be impossible. :)
