College students. Is a laptop worth it?

a laptop is NOT worth it. it is a hell of a hassel to drag it to campus and back to the dorm esp if you live on a hill considering there are prolly many librarys there with computer access and maybe even laptop check out

I went with the high-powered ~ $2000 desktop replacement laptop for my freshman year, in retrospect, I would have better off had I bought a cheap laptop for ~ $1000 and then used the rest to build an above average desktop. That, IMHO is the best way to go, but you may find the case to be different.

When I was in college (1998-99) our professors didn't want laptops in the class. The only one that I remember not saying anything about them was my Russian professor (try typing in Russian and you'll see why it would be a pain to bring one to class anyway).

Depending on what your major is, I'd imagine it would be convenient to bring to the library or the lab. Some law students used to bring them to the law library where I worked.

Of course, laptops are much more common now, but I can see the usefulness in picking up a $400 used job. It only needs a text editor and maybe wireless internet if you're so inclined.

Well I'm not 100% sure yet, but I think i'll opt for a nice desktop, and save the rest of my money. Plus I think a good desktop would be easier and cheaper to use with a removable hard drive (which we will use for some classes).

Thanks for all the advice.

Get one of those little video cameras and tape all your classes, in fact just pay someone 5 bucks to do it for you and you can set around in your room and play games on your huge machine.

Bleep

the only time i ever see laptop in an actual class is on TV... you know, where students call each other by their last names, the rich kids all drape sweaters over their shoulders, and CS majors actually do have duct tape on their glasses.

my little sister will enter college and i bought her a laptop just because, when we're at home together, there's really no need for 3 clunky PC system setup.

When you move out of yoru dorm, you will definately wish you bought a lappy. With a laptop, just pack and go. Only 1 person needed.

haha, its better for convenience in one instance per year? i move my entire system around (router, modem, 19", printer, multi piece speakers) like 20 times per year w/o hassle and i certainly dont need an extra person to help
