College students in Boston are dissapoint.

think cali is on the verge of having a water emergency as well if the big one hits.

ugh. our water went out for like 3 days a couple months ago. We had to melt snow to flush the toilet. Not fun at all. I couldn't wait to go to work so I could drop a deuce and not worry about whether or not there was enough water for my shit to go down the drain.
 
I didn't quite catch the fail. Most people in the US really don't know what to do if they don't have clean tap water. Also, they're kids.
 
atleast u had snow..essentially water lying around everywhere. if sh*t happened in california i'm not sure what one would do. the turds would pile up🙁
 
I think people usually figure that a power outage or water outage will get fixed within the day. So it's a waiting game. Hey, enough of us let our dishes pile up a day in college. 2 days? Not that bad either... 3 days?? Ugh no tap water, I want to wash it, but... come on I bet it's ALMOST fixed.

oh wait this is a water shortage? I have no idea what's going on.. LOL... oh i get it... LOL.
 
This is not a water outage. A major pipe line broke and they are using water straight from the source. In other words, it's the same water, just untreated. All you have to do is boil the water for 1 minute, or buy chlorine tablets (which is all the MWRA does).

It is fixed. They just have to flush out the water in the pipe. That's a 36 hour process.
 
The lack of tap water has given new perspective to the thousands of college students in Boston, many of whom have been struggling to stay awake without coffee as they cram for finals.

Or just get caffeine pills - and as a bonus, per mg, they're cheaper and more portable than coffee.


Some level of redundancy in critical infrastructure would be nice, or at least upgrade the infrastructure with newer technology, and stop doing stupid things.
An example of a stupid thing: The municipality I live in put up a water tower some years ago, in order to boost the pressure. Problem is, the water mains are pretty old, and seem to have difficulty with the pressure - there's a small mains break every few months that takes the water offline and closes the affected section of road for several hours while it's fixed.
It just strikes me as a pretty poor way to run things where periodic pipe ruptures are apparently considered to be acceptable.

They do have redundancy. You get water from a local reserve. It's just not chlorinated before it gets to your house. You just have to boil the water. Also, some cities do have good redundancy. Cambridge gets some of its water from MWRA, but they are not effected at all.

It strikes me as odd is that a college student claims she can't have coffee when they have said numerous times that if you want to drink the water, just boil it. Last I heard, coffee needs to be boiled...even if its instant. Then there is a college student who did not shower for three days. Yeah, they said it's safe to shower in. She is just covering up that she is too lazy to shower.

As for how poorly in they are...Municipalities are businesses. That is how they are run. Any excess money turns into bonuses. Also, upgrading infrastructure costs ALOT. Yes, it is cheaper in the long to to upgrade it, but govt only think in the short term.
 
All them dirty, smelly Bostonians are coming to Cambridge which has it's own water system. Starbucks and restaurants have been packed with those smelly people.

As much as I dislike Boston, the responses in the article seem pretty much what I'd expect to hear from any campus. Most folks have no idea where their food or water comes from.

I guess I just don't really consider that to be true redundancy.
If the redundancy results in water that's potentially contaminated, well, yeah, I guess it's better than having no water at all, but it's certainly not a product that's up to the usual standard.

Heat it, yes. Boil it, not necessarily. Though I really have no idea what my $15 coffee maker's output temperature is. I suppose I could pop a thermocouple in there sometime and find out. 🙂

Sad but true.
As a government official, the only way you can increase costs for any reason and stand a chance of re-election is if you've also got a damn good marketing organization doing your campaign ads and PR management.

And of course, a fair portion of the citizenry of the municipality are also likely to have a similar mindset: Short term gains, in exchange for disproportionate long-term costs.

Nope? Some of it's water comes from Waltham from the Hobbs and Stony brooks which are also part of Weston and Lincoln. Water also comes from Fresh Pond IN Cambridge. Why Waltham doesn't use water from those brooks is b/c it's too cheap to build it's own water filtration plant.

Another funny thing is that after water has been filtered at Fresh Pond in Cambridge, it's piped into a Reservoir in Belmont which only Cambridge has access to. Belmont also has to boil its water.

So yes, Cambridge has it's own water system since no one else accesses it.
 
Most all college kids are pretty dumb. The same idiotic statements could come from any place where there are large numbers of them.

Couple that with adequate and proper preparation throughout the semester, and there's magically ;going to be no need for cramming for exams.

If it was dirty tap water, why not wash your dishes and then wash them again when the clean water came?

Sounds reasonable to me then dealing with the smell

Some good news, Fenway Park is allowing people to bring their own bottled water to the Red Sox game. You don't have to be gouged $5 for a bottle of water.
