College students: How do you afford this madness?!

My senior year:
-$250.00 rent
-$120.00 books per semester
-$650.00 tuition per semester
-$25.00 food (just guessing at this)
-$30.00 Beer, gas, and "incidentals"

+$250.00 GI Bill per month
+$2,500.00 student loan

uh, loans? Why do you think so many people graduate with debt. Youve got 3 options:

1) Work part/full time to pay for it
2) Get mommy and daddy to pay for it
3) Take out some loans

I always worked full time over the summers to save enough money to pay for my rent and stuff during the year. Then I worked part time (10-20hrs/week) over the school year for spending money.

LOL @ OP. If you want to keep the car, then don't complain about the associated costs.

See if you can get cheaper books elsewhere and make your own meals to save money.

<<-----did not have a car when he was in college, sure, it was not fun but doable.

Student loans and a job. Of course, if you're a full time student and work at least 20 hours a week there probably isn't much time for online forums...

Park the car at at the parents, and buy a cheap scooter. You'll make the money back with cheap gas, no insurance, no tags, and no parking fee.

Seriously... I don't know how I am going to afford this:

$500 for rent+util /month (REQUIRED)
$200 for food /month (REQUIRED)
$200 for car /month (REQUIRED)
$350-400 a term for books (YEAH, THAT'S KINDA REQUIRED TOO, DUH)
$70 a term for a fucking parking pass (MAAAAAAAYBE IF I FIND FREE FUCKING PARKING, BUT GOOD LUCK WITH THAT)
!?WTF?!

Ugh.

I need to find some kind of scholarship that pays for my books.

Student Loans are common.

Also, you should be able to work approx. 20hours/week for approx. $10 an hour. More if you're smart (lol, yeah right) / resourceful (also lol). By my calculations that's ~$800 per month.

Sell the car. Get a nice bicycle. Now you have over $100 a month to spend on beer, and you will be riding the bicycle all around to burn off all those calories.

More expensive than a bicycle, but cheaper than a car, would be a *CHEAP, OLD, USED* motorcycle. Like this: http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/mcy/1640371868.html
You can fix it yourself cheaply (if you teach yourself), chicks like motorcycles (not that it would help you at all), and you get to park basically anywhere. Insurance is much cheaper too.

1978... good times...

😀

This is TridentT we're talking about. Anyone expect otherwise?

He gets to skip on easily the most expensive part of college, and yet... he's complaining.

LOL...I wish i had his problem. I did what he did, plus take out student loans, plus work, and now all I have a is a boring job and massive student debt. He has it easy.

Take public transit like 90% of other college students. You'll save on buying a car right away, and one thing you missed that will analy rape you: car insurance. When I got a quote to put my car insurance under my name it was over 5k per year.

Make sure to have a summer job lined up so you can be working full time between terms, that way you can pickup money for the next term. At that point you can be living at home instead of spending all that money on rent.

I got lucky with the fact that the college was in my city so I stayed home. My only real expense was tuition and books, and yeah, books will rape you. If you have a choice to not buy a bood, then don't, and see if you actually need it. I had some courses where the books were only opened once, and it was to put my name in it. A huge waste. Ended up in the recycling bin. College books are outdated a year later.

For food, a large pizza costs about 20 bucks and should last you a few days. 😉 Kraft dinner is really cheap too.

Rent/util: Where is this? That rent could be totally reasonable, or you could suck it up and live on campus (and ditch your car), or find a roommate to split the expenses. My rent was never more than $300/month for a good room, but I lived with 5 other people. The guy with the shitty room got to pay $175.

Food: For a single college kid, you should be able to get by on much less than $200/mo for food.

Car: Ride a bike.

Books: Don't buy the books unless you absolutely have to. Even then, use ebay, craigslist and whatnot. The vast majority of my professors didn't teach out of the books anyway.

Parking: Wouldn't be a problem if you just rode a bike.

It's all about standards bud....lower 'em.

And get a job! Ya bum! /Mick

$500 for rent+util /month (REQUIRED) - CHEAP
$200 for food /month (REQUIRED) - CHEAP
$200 for car /month (REQUIRED) - Public Transportation
$350-400 a term for books (YEAH, THAT'S KINDA REQUIRED TOO, DUH) - You would be surprised what you can find at the library and/or using an older edition text-book.
$70 a term for a fucking parking pass (MAAAAAAAYBE IF I FIND FREE FUCKING PARKING, BUT GOOD LUCK WITH THAT) - Public Transportation

When doing my undergrade in Computer Science my cost exceeded what you stated. Also you have to understand the cost/benefit outcome. Once you get that degree you will make it back many fold. That's one of the reasons why education is so expensive. Unless you get some Bull degree like english or art.

Loans are where it's at. I consolidated my fed loans, and I'd say I get about 1/2 of my loan interest money waived when it comes to tax time. That makes my interest rate around 2%... I'm better off NOT paying the damn loan off anytime soon.

Got by with zero debt through undergrad because of grants and scholarships. Grad school has fucked me though as I'll probably be $30k in the hole when I'm out.

Just keep living in your mom's basement. That eliminates the cost of rent and food, leaving you much more party money.

For those who've suggested that Trident get a job...you obviously haven't been paying attention to his posts. Jobs are for losers...🙄
