Hmm.... I always bought books and read them, and never went to class. Back in school I used to say that professors optional but the books were required.

One semester, I didn't buy any textbooks and came out fine . . . however, i failed one of my classes last semester, so I'm trying to read all the text I've been assigned, but it just ain't happening . . ..

Yeah, sometimes a friend of mine or somebody I know will say that I don't really need to buy a book for a class, but I still do just in case. Most of the time they are actually right though. I'm pretty much a straight A student too...just goes to show the bullsh!t that's put into those books.

I buy most of them. Or borrow a copy from a friend, if I can. I mostly use them for reference for doing homework and studying for tests.

After my second year in college I realized I only read books right before midterms and finals as references. No point in buying them.

You mean you actually keep them? If I kept them it would be because I needed something to start a fire with.

I used most of my Comp Sci text books - especially as references. Most of the others were a waste unless I was really interested in the class.

I've only had...hmm...two classes that didn't require the use of their assigned texts; both were statistical psychology classes. Most every other class has had assigned readings/problems/whatever from the book, though I generally don't touch chapters that remain unassigned by the prof.

These things are freakin' expensive, though. And I love that as your classes get more advanced, the texts get smaller in size yet larger in price. Woohoo!

Several of mine are on my shelves @ work and @ home and get referenced regularly.
Others haven't been out of the box since college, but I used all of them there definitly. Or at least the technical ones.
I don't know how you get through an engineering curriculum without the textbooks.

Jesus, by the time i buy my text book, their already out of date, or no longer are offered in that revision and a new one is out and they screw me over. I havn't bought a text book since freshman year, first term. I am a junior now. . .

Waste of money. If you need to look something up, its on the net, if you really need the book, get it from half.com, if you don't want to spend any money, go into your book store and copy something out from it. . .

I read them for the exams. Then I forget the stuff. Don't be like me. Try to retain what you learn in college.
